Cage fighting. My dad is a big boxing fan but he doesn't like UFC. He says it is savagry and that boxing is science. He also says that no UFC fighter could compete with the science of a Flyod Mayweather. He says it is human cock fighting.

UFC does nothing for me either. Much prefer Boxing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,739 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

Boxing is pretty boring to me, but is more technical probably. MMA is much more interesting because of the huge diversity of fighting styles.

I'd rather watch two large MMA fighters beating each other than watch 2 large Boxers.

But smaller lighter boxers are far tougher I think, skinny guys fight til they are burger. Big guys aren't as interesting to watch as Bantam weight.

    Not my 'cup of tea'.

Prefer boxing or some other more (what I consider) better clearer, more professional martial art sport such as Judo, Sumo or Karate to watch.

I'm not really into either to be honest.

Im a huge boxing fan and it is most definitely a science.

You dad knows jack about MMA. The top guys have spent their life dedicated to various forms of martial arts - MMA gives them the opportunity to be a pro athlete. Whilst boxing will always be my #1 MMA is also very technical.

Boxing is known as the sweet science - why, because it takes a brain and a helleva lot of skill to be successful

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 18,300 ✭✭✭✭Seaneh

I find UFC and MMA in general very boring to watch. No doubting the skill involved but far too often it turns into a sweaty man hugging match on the ground and is just crap to watch.

K1 is more exciting in general though.

There is a fair bit to boxing but there is a hell of a lot more to mma. You need a grounding in all areas if you want to compete. You think Mayweather would last long on the ground with a Jujitsu specialist ? Not a hope in hell.

and if a BJJ fighter had to stay on his feet ina ring with mayweather he'd be sparked in about 15 seconds.

Also, my my auntie had balls she'd be my uncle.

Compete with mayweather boxing?? No chance in a proper fight mayweather would be demolished. As for human cock fighting?? Mma fights have significantly less shots to the head than boxing

  • Registered Users Posts: 720 ✭✭✭Fight_Night

Your Dad obviously just doesn't know what he's talking about. Mixed Martial Arts, as the name suggests, is just a mix of martial arts(fighting styles), and is no more akin to human cockfighting than boxing is.

I much prefer it to boxing myself. It's safer, far more entertaining and because it's essentially a no weapons street fight in a boxing ring, you can see who the best overall fighter is, as opposed to who has the best punches or the best feet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,301 ✭✭✭Daveysil15

There is a lot of skill involved in MMA, but I think boxing is more aesthetically pleasing. I don't want to see 2 guys holding each other on the ground for 20 minutes.

Although boxing has gone crap lately. The K1 is my fave - some great fights in that.

See this is why I prefer the UFC. Under boxing rules, mayweather wins hands down and vice versa for the UFC fighter.

But hypothetically on the street, the UFC fighter has the advantage every time.

Was the op made the point not me. Fact is any professional couldnt compete outside their own sport. All a boxers "science" is redundant against the science of jujitsu when he'd on his back getting the life choked out of him.

There is quite a lot more to mma than boxing. Only so many ways you can throw a punch and move. Plenty more when your doing MMA trying to defend against takedowns, punches, kicks etc etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,715 ✭✭✭DB21

Did your dad really use Mayweather as an example of a boxer that would beat an MMA fighter? I suppose he probably could if the guy was just about to retire/came out of retirement for the match, considering that's how "Money" picks his boxing opponenets. If he got in there with a fighter at his peak, Mayweather wouldn't last 1 round.

Is striking in UFC a science? Or is it just a guy freaking out and smashing somebody's head in? And is bjj a science? Or just a guy trying to snap somebody's arm? Boxing is a science though, like Marvin Hagler v Sugar Ray

The more you learn about the individual arts like Jujitsu / kick-boxing / wrestling etc you can begin to appreciate the skill involved

When the UFC first started it was very interesting because there was fighters from different backgrounds competing. Now all the fighters are cross-trained so it all just looks the same.

Not entirely true. That generation of fighter has not arrive. All the top guys come from a specific background, maybe GSP the exception.

It wasn't interesting at all. It is an insight into just how silly and useless a lot of martial arts are though in a real scenario.

Its a science though cos his daddy says it is. Not like the savagery of the UFC with two lads trying to beat the shíte out of each other. Woudnt see that in the science of boxing. Just Professor Mayweather doing science in the ring.

GSP is a great fighter and good to watch I must admit. Anyone ever hear of Genki Sudo, the Japanese fighter? Now he was an entertaining fighter.

Should be a third option with a middle ground. I like MMA, but dont go out of my way to watch it. I dont follow it, but if it's on, I'll watch it. Guess it's mostly yes though.

Compared to boxing its an easy choice to make. Boxing matches will, more often than not, fail to deliver in my experience. While MMA fights can do the same, it happens a lot less. Both cases are assuming each match contains two good participants and not two guys off the street.

He sure is. He is the only champion I can think of that doesn't have a BJJ / Karate etc background. He is what I call the the modern MMA fighter.

Now with the success of UFC guys are training to be MMA fighters. The guys on tv trained BJJ / Boxing / Wrestling etc and developed the other skills later in life.

Anyone that says it's gay just has no concept of wrestling/judo/jiu jitsu. It's so much more technical than 2 lads just standing there and punching each other in the face like boxing.

Boxing is so boring too, there is one big fight every couple of years. At least with the UFC you get huge names coming up against each other every couple of months.

Plus, who the f*ck wants to pay a ton of money to watch 2/3 fights? You get your monies worth with the UFC - 12 fights per card usually.

Lets no turn this into Boxing v MMA

And for the records MMA cards are fast becoming all about the main event just like boxing.

Usually alot of the main card is pretty good I think, but the litany of lightweight fights on the prelims and undercard bore the snot out of the back end of me aul arse. It's a little bit overkill, who's gonna watch Jimmy 50 kg roll around with boring willy face for 15 mins when Overeem is fighting Lesnar later.

The weight doesn't really bother me. But the UFC is going down the road of boxing, diluting the cards to maximise profit

UFC is great, heavyweight division doesn't really interest me though, just full of wrestlers which ain't my thing.

Hell of a lot of skill involved in MMA for sure, but i do see where your dad was coming from. A lot of MMA fighters are failed pro boxers, even Anderson Silva, the #1 fighter on the planet couldn't make it as a pro boxer.

As mentioned earlier though let's not turn this into boxing vs MMA, we're allowed be fans of both. :)
