We are in an unusual extreme drought situation on the west coast of Canada with weather more typical of California since mid-July. It is now about three months since we had enough rain to wet the ground at all, perhaps 10 mm has fallen since about the first week of July (when the ground was still soaked from heavy rains in May and June). Gradually an extreme drought has developed and the past week has been sunny with highs in the lower 20s, almost mid 20s today. This picture shows how dry it is, normally the grass on this lawn would be almost the same shade of green as the bushes in the shade.

Looking at Ogimet, only 5.5mm of rain at Hillcrest, Vancouver (71042) since mid July and only one day with more than 1mm in that time!

How does it rate historically? I've always thought of Vancouver as having a similar climate to Ireland only with slightly better summers

Harps, it is definitely the driest August-September in over a century around here, the dry spell often comes and goes in the middle of the summer like maybe late July to mid August, but this is exceptional. In a normal year it rains two or three times a week by this point in the developing wet season that peaks in November-December when it tends to rain almost all the time around here with the odd break.

I feel envious about the weather MT is getting over the summer and into autumn. You are reporting great summer weather. the opposite is true in Ireland. We are having the worst period of weather this summer and autumn.

Raining steadily this morning from a northeasterly direction. Pretty calm in terms of breeze. 10 degrees C.

Roads in my neck of the woods are a sheet of water and I'm having difficulty in understanding why, given the last few dry days that we've had.
