Prob the best place to ask (effort of PM'ing a mod) , any reason why Flight (and Lincoln) have no threads yet ?

    Lincoln thread is here:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=69113263

I could have swore there was a thread for Flight as well but I can't find it. The new search is unreliable so doesn't mean it's not there. Start a new one if you like. Both films aren't out for another couple of weeks which is why there's not much discussion of them at the moment.

Jaysus got half way through and had to give up. An article written with a clear agenda against Bigelow and the authors interpretation of every staggered line of quotation.

In th first half of the hugely biased and one sided article, when I could eventually stumble across a Bigelow quote, I saw no mention of her support for torture and war.

I'd like to read the Bigelow interview somewhere in its entirety and make up my own mind, not this preachy biased tripe.

Ok, I caved and I went to see silver linings playbook in Cineworld (still annoyed at the price!) - great film. Really enjoyed it. Love Di Niro in it.
Saw the ad for Lincoln for the first time, looking forward to that Nxt wk. Seems like I'm gonna be spending most of Feb in the cinema :)

Argo has just won Best Film and Ben Affleck has won Best Director at the Producers Guild of America awards:

Says in the article that the film that walks away with the PGA award typically wins Best Picture at the Oscars too.

With Affleck winning Best Director at both the Golden Globes and now the PGA's, it makes his Oscars snub all the more puzzling. Add to that, his nomination for Best Director at the Director's Guild of America awards, one has to wonder what the guy's done to p!ss off the Academy!

Good article here about some of the reasons why both he and Kathryn Bigelow may have been omitted..

if you think Zero Dark Thirty is a movie supporting torture you were watching the wrong film, that article is absolute waffle. Is Steven Spielberg supporting slavery by showing slavery on film? Nope.

Half the articles I've read against Zero Dark Thirty seem to be by people who either haven't seen or have completely misunderstood the film. I read a feature in Sight & Sound last night comparing it to a consequence free shoot 'em up - a reading so off the mark even the editor of the magazine expresses his strong disagreement with it. It's as if people desperately want it to be be a piece of pro-military jingoism so they can get all righteous about it. ZDT is not that film, by a long shot. I really struggle to marry the outrage with the content I saw last night.

ZDT was the one film from the Oscar nominations I choose not to watch, due to what I read online. Think I'll watch it later this evening now.

I don't get all the hate for McFarlane.

The guy is funny, charming and a great singer.
He looks good & is at ease in front of the camera.

I think he will do well.

Besides.... it can't be Billy Crystal forever.

Good choice I think. Expecting good things.

The fact that many of these articles appeared before there had even been any screenings says all you need to know about the validity of them. The protestors at the premiere and other screenings much like those behind the negative articles really come across as idiots. It's clear that a lot of people desperately wanted the film to come out and say "torture is great" simply so they could get up on their high horse and spout nonsense. Hell when I mentioned seeing the film in a post on Facebook the first reply was "I'd never pay to see disgusting pro torture propaganda and really you should be ashamed of yourself for supporting a film that trues to legitimise an evil cabal businessmen who saw war as the easiest way to get at their previous black hold. Bigalow should if there is any just in the world be prosecutors for war crimes given how she tries to justify torture."

I had a long thought out reply to him but decided to simply hide all his posts and infirm him that he is an idiot.

It's been a long long time since a movie has won best picture without the director being nominated for best director. This would suggest Argo has a very slim chance of winning best picture.

I hope Argo doesn't win Best Picture just so I don't have to watch one of Affleck's co-producers make a dig at the audience for not nominating Affleck.

I hope Argo doesn't win best picture because at least four or five of the other nominees are superior and much more interesting films :P

Slightly O/T, but Ebert posted up a scan of Variety in 1941 musing about Oscar nominations. Amazing it still consumes so many film journalists and analysts 70 years later!

Are we allowed to talk about Oscar odds here? Sure a mod can delete it and lynch me if necessary.

I threw away €19.50 yesterday in the following way

    Django - best original screenplay - €5 @ 2/1
    Ang Lee - best director - €5 @ 6/1
    Michael Hanke - best director - €5 @ 12/1
    Life of Pi - best Picture - €2.50 @ 40/1
    Amour - best picture - €2 @ 66/1

Ah, the great Lincoln vs. Argo debate.
One is set at a key time in American history, juxtaposing the protagonist's complicated relationship with his wife and son alongside his duty to his country. A great insight into the machinations of Washington. Impeccable production design, brilliant cinematography, great supporting performances and a masterwork of creating tension, even though we all know what the outcome is before we even enter the cinema.
    The other film is Lincoln.

Wouldn't complain if either Lincoln or Argo won, just so long as it isn't the bland, obvious and uncinematic Zero Dark Thirty.

Django and Amour are clearly the best in that category though.

Lincoln was the favourite for Best Picture, but that has now changed. Argo has now won the Golden Globe, the SAG cast award (their equivalent of Best Picture, effectively) and the PGA Best Picture. As Donald Clarke pointed out in his Irish Times blog, these are very strong indicators that it could get the Oscar - the latter in particular - since the last five winners of the PGA went on to get the Academy Award for Best Picture.

2024 Gigs and Events: David Suchet, Depeche Mode, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Smile, Pixies, Liam Gallagher John Squire/Jake Bugg, Kacey Musgraves (x2), Olivia Rodrigo, Mitski, Muireann Bradley, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, Girls Aloud, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Rewind Festival, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Henry Winkler, P!nk, Pearl Jam/Richard Ashcroft, Taylor Swift/Paramore, Suede/Manic Street Preachers, Muireann Bradley, AC/DC, Deacon Blue/Altered Images, The The, blink-182, Coldplay, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Nick Lowe, David Gilmour, ABBA Voyage, St. Vincent, Public Service Broadcasting, Crash Test Dummies, Cassandra Jenkins.

Affleck has picked up the Directors Guild Award as well.
Argo is 4/11 for Best Picture now.

Regardless of general opinion, I can't understand how he's picked up practically EVERY award without even getting a Nomination from the Academy.

It's becoming rather embarrassing for the Academy now. Affleck is only the third director in the DGA's 65 year history to have won without a corresponding Oscar nomination.

It'll be interesting to see how it does at the BAFTA's next week, as he is favourite to win there too.

I don't really understand exactly how the voting works, but I would have thought there was some overlap in voters for the different awards? If there is, it makes it even more puzzling that he didn't get an Oscar nomination.

There's a decent article here examining the seeming discrepancy between the Academy and other organisations: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/25/movies/awardsseason/directors-guild-vs-oscars-an-unusual-year.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Interesting section about how the changing make-up of the director's branch of the Academy would have favoured the likes of Haneke or Zeitlin (and while I think Beasts... was really impressive if a little rough around the edges, it's really encouraging to see such an imaginative, boldly directed debut feature receive such unexpected nominations).
In recent years death has claimed senior members of the branch, including many who were known for sophisticated mainstream films like those just made by Mr. Affleck and Ms. Bigelow. Among branch members who have died since 2008 are Sydney Pollack, Tony Scott, John Hughes, Blake Edwards and Sidney Lumet.

Studio types all, they have been replaced in the branch in recent years almost entirely by foreign-speaking or indie-oriented directors. Those to whom membership was offered lately include the brothers Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne; Philippe Falardeau; Rodrigo Garcia; Michel Hazanavicius; Michaël Roskam; Wong Kar Wai; Gregg Araki; Neil Burger; Yojiro Takita; Jacques Audiard; and Lone Scherfig.

I won't claim to know much about how the voting works, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Academy gave Best Picture to something other than Argo to back up their "snub" with regards to the Best Director nominations.

I hope that's not the case, for entirely selfish reasons

Last time a film won best picture without the director been nominated was Driving Miss Daisy back in 1989.
I wouldn't be surprised if Argo won, this now looks like an open race for best picture.

Yeah. Much is being made of the fact that Barbra Streisand is performing, as she's not sung at the Oscars for thirty-five years or something. I'm predicting she'll sing The Way We Were in tribute to the great Marvin Hamlisch, who died last year.

I really hope there is one surprise/shock win tonight many seem to predict it will be De Niro for supporting actor but I'd love Joaquin Phoenix to take best actor over DDL even though he seems a lock, JLaw seems to be favourite now to take best actress award with Anne Hathaway a lock for best supporting actress

No requests for or links to illegal streaming sites please.

Although rather amazed the Academy are requesting thirty dollars for it. Crazy stuff. Award ceremonies are second only to press conferences as the most painfully dull live events to watch.
