How much does it cost these days to release a patch through to the xbox platform? $40,000? And how much to release a game under xbox?
The $40k figure that Schaffer quoted would have been for multiple platforms, not just the 360. The issue came up again during the Fez patch fiasco where Fish came out and said it wasn't worth paying the $10k to release a patch. So in the context of XBLA, I'd imagine the figure is closer to that.

As for how much it costs to release a game on either platform, I'd imagine you'll find the figure rather difficult to find since it'll be buried in a sea of legal documents. :)

I just hope the shooter market dies down abit especially military shooters.
There has being enough great games this generation that makes me happy.
Only thing that be getting me worried if japan moves away from consoles because despite all the media bashing and even from fans japan still are making my favourite games with the likes of valkyria chronicles , demons/dark souls, yakuza series, vanquish, bayonetta , the last story, xenoblade, pandora tower, catherine etc..

I think the future of consoles will be ok though , there will always be great games

as long as the sheep keep buying fifa or generic fps every year, there's no incentive for any innovation in the industry.

I don't get that argument at all. The huge amounts of money that those games bring in surely allow studios and publishers the resources to take risks. And anyway, why is it an either/or? EA have been releasing FIFA games since the early 90s and it hasn't stopped other games being released.

Plus it's incredibly offensive to people who buy them.

A bit trivial to be offended by someone else's views on your purchases.

It's a problem with art in general and in particular revenue generating art.

Most art forms have been exhausted, we've done and tried everything, there hasn't really been a new style of music since the 80s, all stories have the same basic principles at their core and when your making artistic endeavours to try and make the most money you just go with what you believe the most amount of people will tolerate.

It's not going to change it'll just get worse.

I don't get this argument at all, seems to me like massively unfair generalisations. Of course you're not going to find the best art being produced if you look at bestseller shelves, Gamestop displays or music / film charts. Look just a little beyond that, and suddenly you're completely spoiled for choice. A majority don't, and that continues the trend of crassly commercialised works and products receiving the most attention. Just ignore them. I know I do, and am never short of amazing, inspiring things to watch, listen to, read or play. Yes, there are only seven basic story types. Artists have been riffing on them for several millennia now. They continue to shock, surprise and innovate.

It happens very, very rarely these days. Very rarely.

Maybe age plays into it too, as you get older and trends start making their third or fourth rounds you just tend to give up on culture.

Could effortlessly name you seven or eight genuinely great film or game releases from the last few weeks alone - from arthouse / independent titles to much more mainstream releases. I tend to be a bit behind in terms of music and literature, but I'm sure someone would be able to make a similar argument for them.

More powerful systems won't change a thing.. Kinect was the first really major attempt at innovation and until we can throw on a cap and control a game with our minds, we're likely stuck with what we have.

Kind of sad that I bought a gaming laptop a couple of weeks ago and I've just been playing roller coaster tycoon.. Was excited to see what I could get that wasn't on xbox and just can't find anything new that grabs me and makes the purchase worth it.

Ideas welcome btw. I haven't been up on game news for a long time and maybe just don't know any interesting new stuff.

Probably deserves a thread of its own :), first question would be how many years is the the gap in your PC gaming CV?

I just bought grand ages Rome yesterday, it's not a game you can just pick up and play though.

There are loads of sim games, even driving sims. You could probably run http://www.kartracing-pro.com/ but I think you really need a wheel for driving games.

If you go to the likes of cdwow.ie you'll find loads of PC games around the €10 mark. Being out of the loop means you've got a wealth of budget game options.

No thanks, a joypad is fine by me. Motion control is bad enough, but mind control? No thanks, my subconscious would sabotage gameplay I think :D
