I need advice / help in relation to my house (work needs to be done)

I purchsed a house twelve years ago.

The house is approximately one hundred years old.

I had work done on the house which was overseen by my father (who has a construction background)

My father has since passed on and I need to have some more work done on the house:

Problems with water leaks and dampness on wall (may be caused by leaks)

I need PROFESSIONAL advice on how to proceed.

I'm thinking of bringing in a surveyor to look at the house and advise me on what work needs to be done. Is this a good idea? How do I proceed without getting ripped off?

Any and all advice to a novice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

ChucKerlaw - You might have better luck finding out about surveyors, over at 'Construction + Planning'].
What works have been carried out on the house so far? Some pictures would be helpfull.
