    That's impressive John!

Mercian Pro- is/was no. 1 connected with pawnbroking?

Looks like it, the 3 balls is the symbol for a pawnbrokers.
There used to be a few on Capel St. John Brereton still remains with the 3 golden balls outside.

Is - no; Was - yes. Have you been able to make out the writing on the chimney stack below the symbol?

Ah, Nimrod just got there first!

Thanks, I knew all those mornings sitting in traffic on the bus would eventually pay off

A few (very) cryptic clues to hopefully speed things up:
    Ulysses and the BVM.

A few (very) cryptic clues to hopefully speed things up:
    Ulysses and the BVM.

Some probably useless stabs in the semi-dark:

    1. BVM would lead me to the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the corner of Fairview Strand/Phillipsburgh Avenue. Opposite this church on Fairview Strand there is an oldish building with I think the name "Communications House" on it now. That name is modern enough I think. It's not the top of that one is it? Not sure where Ulysses fits in there right enough.

    2. Just off James Joyce Street there is a St Mary's Mansions but most of James Joyce Street is modern so not sure.

Closer with 2 than 1 Babaracus but still some distance off I'm afraid.

    Ulysses and the BVM.
    mmmmmmm.....let me see.

Ulysses - Nora Barnacle- Eccles Street
BVM's spouse = Joseph - St Joseph's Parade behind Eccles Street.

    Ice cold I suppose!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

Not ice cold but not quite hot either. The owner of the pawnbrokers is the link with Ulysses.

I have a feeling that it's somewhere from Smithfield to Phibsborough..

    Could be totally wrong

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

No, Nimrod. Wishbone and Babaracus are closer. The triangular chimney stack is quite rare but it has five others as neighbours.
Another photo clue tomorrow and the BVM connection if nobody spots it before then.

This is the front of the same building on the left in 1913 and no, I didn't take it. The caption refers to the statue with the Pawnbroker's symbol.
    7HWycR.jpg

At some stage over the last century, the statue morphed into this, presumably when some religious order bought the house.

    So, where is it?

    North Circular?

    North Circular?

    Ah come on

A road that runs from Phoenix Park to Summerhill taking in a number of postcodes is hardly a specific answer to the location of a building. :p

    Afraid not.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,624 ✭✭✭Dancor

I know that from somewhere, is it Gardnier Street or Sharard street?

You tell me - one guess only:)

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 26,402 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peregrine

Gardiner Street, I was thinking that but I couldn't find it on Google Maps

But I think it's the first building on Gardiner Street after the Gardiner/Dorset junction, before Sharard Street

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

Well done Nimrod - poached from under Dancor's nose!
It's in the middle of the first terrace of houses on the right hand side of Gardiner Street.
This is the view of the backs from Dorset Street:
    5MzMwM.jpg

The Ulysses connection is that Mrs M'Guinness, the proprietor of the pawnshop at 38 Gardiner Street is mentioned in the book (well I did say it was cryptic!).

Ah behind the building, that's why I couldn't find the chimney after all that Streetviweing around that area yesterday :o Must have seen it from the bus or something.

Somebody who guessed the first two go

Hi there, first time guesser. Is it on Botanic Road? A building known as Creation House. Don't know what it was originally called.
