We are happy to announce that 1 million Visa Debit cards have now issued.

We would like to remind all customers who have received their Visa Debit cards to activate their card as soon as possible. Your current Laser/ATM card will be deactivated after 2 months of the Visa Debit card being issued.

Thank you to all the customers that have given us feedback on this forum.

Again just to remind all customers to activate their Visa Debit card to avoid any issues.

Please see here as to why you may not have received your Visa Debit card.

    Thanks
    Linda

what is the purpose of it - whats changed. Is it to get money out of account straight away rather than wait a month?

And what if there is not funds actually in the current account ?

    Hi Paddy De Plasterer.

    Thanks for your query.
All Laser Cards are being replaced with Visa Debit and the rollout is on schedule and should be completed by the end of September. The reason we are changing to Visa Debit is that they offer more functionality than Laser which includes:

    Greater worldwide acceptance
    Wider online acceptance
    Greater convenience when you shop
Verified by Visa – great security online
    Greater consumer protection
    Contactless payments

When the Visa Debit card is used, the funds will be debited from your account straight away. If there are no funds in your account and you do not have an overdraft facility in place, your purchase may be declined.

    Hope this helps.

There was never a months credit facility on Laser cards - the funds were debited from your current account straight away or within a day or two. You may be confusing debit cards with credit cards.

The Laser (debit) card is just being replaced with a different brand of debit card (visa Debit) - it works the same as a Laser. Basically, (apart from being able to use it in many more places than you could use the Laser) it makes no real major difference to your day to day banking - it's just a card with a different colour & design that you will be using. The money has to be in your current account in order for the payment to be processed, just like it did with your Laser card.

Credit cards (no matter if they're Visa or Mastercard are a completely different form of payment to Debit cards. The amount of your purchase has to be less than your available credit & under your credit limit in order for the payment to be processed. Using a Visa Debit card has no effect on your Credit card, or the way it operates.

    Hi Paddy,

Cushie Butterfield is correct. The Visa Debit card is just a replacement for your Laser card. There isn't a credit facility built into the card. You would need to have an overdraft facility on your current account to avail of credit.

As mentioned above, credit cards and debit cards would work in completely different ways. With a Bank of Ireland MasterCard or Visa Credit Card you would have an assigned credit limit. You can make purchases and cash withdrawals up to your credit limit. You would then have to make a minimum payment each month toward your outstanding balance.

With your Visa Debit card you need to have the funds available in your account brfore you make a purchase or withdrawal.

I hope this helps clarify things.

    Thanks
    Pat

what happens my old visa cards, are they not cancelled when i activate new debit card, they had one month facility. i never had a laser card, but i got new visa debit one.

    Hi Paddy De Plasterer,

If your old visa cards are in fact credit cards, they are not connected in anyway to the new Visa Debit card. Activating your Visa Debit card will not affect your credit card account in anyway.

A Visa Debit card is connected to your current account, and you can use it to transact up to the available funds in your current account. If you previously held an ATM only card on your current account, it may have been upgraded to a Visa Debit card. If you contact your branch a representative will be happy to clarify this for you. Contact details for your branch can be found here.

    Hope this helps.

ok Thanks. I was under impression that new Visa debit card when activated, would replace my old Via and Mastercard credit cards.

    Hi kleefarr,

Thanks for your query. That's correct, 'payWave' is what Visa call the product. If you have any further questions feel free to ask.

    Thanks

What's the best way to deactivate it? It's a bit easy to have it scanned and cloned.

If you've received a Contactless Visa Debit card and you would prefer one without this functionality. Please contact your branch and they will be able to issue you out replacement Visa Debit card that cannot make contactless transactions.

    Hi Davy1719,

Our contactless cards include the latest security features and the protection of our customers' data and card security is a primary concern to us. .

The Visa Ireland website has a lot of information about security. You can access the site here

If someone was to swipe your card without you knowing it, your branch would initiate an investigation.

    Thanks
