Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hundreds of problems have been found at European nuclear plants that would cost 25bn euros (£20bn) to fix, says a leaked draft report.
    ...
"On the basis of the stress test results practically all [nuclear plants] need to undergo safety improvements," says the leaked draft. "Hundreds of technical upgrade measures have already been identified.

"Following the accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, urgent measures to protect nuclear plants were agreed. The stress tests demonstrated that even today, decades later, their implementation is still pending in some member states."

Four reactors in two unnamed countries would have less than an hour to restore safety functions if electrical power was lost, it adds.

In France, Europe's largest nuclear power producer which relies on 58 nuclear reactors for 80% of its electricity, specific failings were found in all 58 nuclear reactors.
    So yet more hidden costs.

Again the consistent failure to predict risks. ( "Nuclear is safe because we've thought of everything" )

The accident at Three Mile Island happened in the 1970's and they still haven't implemented the urgent measures that were agreed upon.

If we had a nuclear power plant , based on our ability to manage large infrastructure projects, how long do you thing we'd stall on the urgent upgrades for fear of paying for them or because of political games ?

A bit of insulation tape would stop the draughts leaking.

Stick wind turbines on the cooling towers and the upgrading would pay for itself.

    Eventually.

We don't need a nuclear plant of our own, don't we have an extension lead plugged into one in the UK.

I hope Electric Ireland bypassed the meter and are saving us money for a change.

Hmm, just as well there aren't also dozens of parked up Soviet era submarines with nuclear reactors on board left rotting in semi-abandoned pens across the Baltics etc. That would be a really bad thing! Hold on...

Nuke power is a total public liability in every way.

But how else are we gonna get us mutant fishies?

Read about 3 mile island some time back in this book seems most of the events and reasons for it are in the preview here.

Seems to be loads of errors which contributed to the failure.

Maintenance tags obscuring instruments, height of operator consoles blocking the view, some instrument needles operating clockwise others anti clock etc

No, I made it up, I'm also making it up about all the other Soviet crap with reactors on board rotting in Ports like their old Ice-breakers and battleships and Destroyers. And their Nuclear plants. And every other nuclear plant ever built. Here's a quick question- if you build a room that houses such immense levels of radiation that to enter is to die, who exactly do you get to do the maintenance? Al-Quaeda suicide plasterers? A Robot? Well, Robots do some good work, but generally they are a bit crap at roofs, walls and installing complex structural steel and the like.
Every thing thats built requires maintenance, the whole "not being able to get near to big bits of it" causes a few long term problems.

Just as well Human error wasn't involved eh! The one damn thing we just can't seem to eliminate.

Nuclear smuclear. Most of these plants are years old the modern ones are fantastic. I have no links to back up this claim.

We have, we spent many millions on a nuclear filter that detects and turns back any bad energy that gets sent our way. We only accept pure unadulterated old-style power, in keeping with our Overseas image. The filter works using reverse osmosis, a lot of sand and some leprechauns. It is a triumphant legacy of our former Green leaders. That and the carbon tax.

Not to mention that at one point the electricity company threatened to cut them off for non payment of bills for the power used by the cooling systems.

The company backed down when faced by armed sailors.

€25 billion? Sure that's small change!

Ireland probably spent that on just the new logo for Anglo !

€25 billion?? Pfftt, that's pretty much only one Irish bank bailed out. We gave Aib €21bn. We could have fixed all the stations with that.

€25 billion sounds awful big - but I wonder how much the EU 27 spend every year on coal, oil and gas?

€25 billion spent on nuclear plants would be enough to keep a fair chunk of Europe going for 50 years or so; in oil terms, that would cover us for like, two?

    Just sayin'

Good to see the Govts message that "a billion is chickenfeed" is getting to be mainstream. You'd follow a crow a long way to gather up €1000,000,000 in loose change.
