Can anyone suggest resources for a child with an interest in zoology please?

    What age child?

David Attenborough's series of Life documentaries are brilliant (Trials of Life in particular) and can be enjoyed by everyone.

Planet Earth and Life are two excellent BBC series. Some really incredible scenes in both of them. And again, narrated by Attenborough.

the child is 12. We have seen a lot of those programmes. I wondered about interactive websites maybe? The only one I know is the National geographic. Thanks

    Hmm...

You could try the Natural History Museum website (http://www.nhm.ac.uk/kids-only/index.html). It has a big kids section with games and quizzes and other activities. A lot of information and nice pictures as well.

The BBC is very good too. Here's the link to their section on prehistoric life: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/prehistoric_life/dinosaurs/. Learned a lot from here when I was younger but it seems a bit neglected now.

The Dublin Zoo site has a few webcams of certain animals (elephants for example) which are quite fun to watch. http://www.dublinzoo.ie/17/Webcams.aspx

If your child is a confident reader you could introduce them to science websites such as New Scientist. They do a lot of stories on animals and nature. The Zoologger blog looks at different unusual animals (available here: http://www.newscientist.com/topic/zoologger) though it could be a bit advanced for a twelve year old.

Thanks for that info. The child would be a confident reader alright. Hoping to visit the natural history museum this year too

I really enjoyed the books of Attenborough's series' when I was that age. I also had a couple of animal encyclopedias that I read till they fell apart, and now my 12 year old nephew reads them.

At that age my idea of heaven was to be brought to the animal section of a bookshop and let pick out anything I wanted. Come to think of it, it still is!

That sounds like my lad too Kylith.
Must get to a bookshop soon, havent been since he was in the dinosaurs and fossils phase. Have loads of those books but not so many on animals.

You could try http://www.arkive.org/ it has pictures, videos and information on the biology and habitat of most species. There is also a kids section with interactive games.
