Split Screen gaming in Full Screen

I posted this in resi 6 thread but wondering if any one on Boards uses this for other games?

Apparently with any Passive 3D TV, you can set the 3D mode to top/bottom or left/right. Then with 3d glasses, the left lense shows player 1's screen and the right lense shows player 2's screen. Modifying the glasses putting 2 left lenses into one pair of glasses shows your player's view in full screen while the 2nd player only sees their own view in full screen.

Anyway, video below explains it much better than I can and looks really class. I need a new TV soon and would be tempted to go the 3D route just for this purpose.

I presume games have to have built in feutures to be able to have such split screen?

I think as long as the game has left/right or top/bottom splitscreen, the passive 3d tv options take care of the rest. Not 100% sure though and would do a lot of research before buying one to make sure.

Basically does what a Playstation TV does? Those go for pretty cheap nowadays if you look around online.

These TVs work well. I have once since last Christmas, (treated myself)
Got a Philips 47pfl7606. Along with the TV purchase, got 3D gaming glasses. Although, these are easy enough to make.

The pictures arent 100% perfect, there is some ghosting while playing in this method, so dont expect to be the same as playing in single mode/

Very good for FPS, car games etc. Use it for PC gaming, as well as Wii \ PS3.

    Any questions, just ask :)

And as a bonus you can use the same technique when the local cinema tries to ram 3D down your throat. :)

Hey man, since models get updated and change, what feature am I looking for in the specs of the tv's. Is it jus tbecause it is passive 3d or is it a specific Philips function? I read Philips patented a splitscreen design.

I have a passive LG 3DTV, and I can confirm this works, as long as there's an even split in the screen, so CoD won't work for example.

I thought COD, like the game in the video had an even split? I take it Resi Evil 5 or 6 won't work though as it's split screen is uneven like below with the screens being top left/bottom right

Cool, the 3D glasses for my projector only cost £70, all I have to do is buy four pairs rip them apart and hope it works. although, I've already broken the glasses I got with the projector so I'm halfway there.

€70? Are you sure it's passive 3d that it uses?

Nah, Philips just registered the "2 player gaming mode" name. I think any passive 3D TV will work in this way. Just need a pair of glasses, one with 2 left lens and the other two right lens and away you go :-)

It might work for RE6 if you're willing to play at 1024x768. That way you should have two widescreen images on top of another. I don't know this for sure as I don't have a copy of the game or a 3DTV. I'm not sure either if PS3 outputs in that resolution, 360 most definitely does.

This technology is on my LG 42LM620T, referred to as Dual Play.

Easy enough to make your own Dual Play glasses too.

Ya, I think our current telly will need to have an 'accident' before justifying a new one :D
