Sorry if this question has been asked before. I started running about two months ago and I'm looking for a 5k or 10k event to cut my teeth in. My only previous outing was a 6k road race about 8-9 years ago which I did in 38 minutes, with some walking breaks included. I'm working my way back to that level of fitness again and learning to pace myself a bit better. Eventually my goal is to finish a marathon but with work and study commitments it won't be this year and maybe not next year either.

I'm looking for events that aren't too far from me which would be East Galway, Mayo or Roscommon. Are there any coming up in the next month or two that people would recommend?

There is a four mile in Ballina next Sunday - might be a bit far from you?

Have a look at the website below

    http://www.runireland.com/events

It is a great resource for race finding

Planning to enter that Ballina 4 mile race. I ran/walked 12k on Sunday (in 1:19:49) and ran 5k last night with no breaks for the first time (in 32:09) so I think I'm good to go :)

I wasn't able to find out from the website if registration is on the day or if I need to join a club first. I was hoping if someone here has done the race before they might know the story, otherwise I could ring the organisers. Like I said I'm a total newbie when it comes to racing.

Entries taken on the day at Ballina ac club house at Beleek. You dont need to join a club just turn up and pay your entry. No prizes goody bags T-shirts etc. All proceeds to cancer research, so esentialy a fun run although it is a race in the Mayo ac league. Nice course, not entirely flat but fast none the less.Hope this is helpfull.

The Conamara 10k is on in Carna this Saturday at 4pm. May be a bit far or short notice but it should be through some great scenery.

There's a 10k in Moylough this Sunday too.

Tarmonbarry 8km, this Sunday 14th Oct
Kilmore GAA (North Roscommon) 8km, Saturday 3rd November
East Galway (Abbeyknockmoy I think) 4 mile, Sunday 18th November

And as someone else said Runireland have plenty of races listed to keep you going into next year.

Thanks, I ended up not racing this weekend, though I did break 30 minutes for 5k for the first time on a training run yesterday. I'll take the plunge soon enough.

I'm aiming at the Castlecoote 5k/10k on bank holiday Monday. I think I'll go for the 5k because I should be able to run all the way without walking breaks - if it's not too hilly!

Anyone know anything about it? I've only ever driven through Castlecoote... Pieta is a great cause though.

I'll be in Castlecoote too on Monday...provided I stay quiet Sunday night!

Probably do the 5k too. I'd be able for 10k but just haven't taken the plunge. A few 8ks coming up that I'll try first.

As for the exact route I'm not sure as there are a few ways they could go. But there more than likely will be a few hills to contend with. All the better :)

I didn't do Castlecoote after all due to being late getting back from Dublin. But I did the Corofin 8k yesterday and it was a great experience!
