Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Alternative to "burning the bondholders"?

I am sick and tired of readings posts on after hours stating that we should "burn the bondholders". I am by no means a fully fledged economist but I have a bit of a background on the subject and and feel burning the bondholders is the wrong way of going about things.

What do the well informed readers of this board think we should do?

I was always of the opinion that we should stab them with the pitchfork a few times before we get to the burnin'

Bondholders are pivate gamblers who bet and lost, but who we, the Irish taxpayer, are giving them back their losses because our retarded politicans.

"Burning" them is only a phrase.

If we stop paying back these losers, we can cut taxes/invest in the economy/avoid cutting services, i.e. it's win-win.

Well seeing as our idea of burning them was wrong, why don't you tell us what we should do.

But we risk locking ourselves out of the international bond market and that would be a bad situation to put ourselves in. I know burning the bondholders is just a term, hence why I put it in quotation marks.

Perhaps you could lock this thread and I could start a new one over on the Irish economy forum ? Cheers.

For the record seeing as our incompetent government can't identify who some bondholders are...

YOOO HOOO Government - here is a few: http://www.diarmaidcondon.com/who-are-the-bondholders-ireland-wont-burn/
(P.S. Government, Noonan is one too! Don't say I told you!)

But they are not by far the lot of them and to quote the Irish examiner (LINK):
It is too late for Ireland to benefit from any change as only about €160m in outstanding payments is owed to senior, unsecured, debt-holders in Anglo and Irish Nationwide — now IRBC.

So lets (or not) move away from the Anglo/IRBC if that part debate comes up.

To quote another good poster from here:
    Seaneh wrote: »
Senior bond holders are actually a very small part of the banks debt.
The vast majority is owed to other European banks.

The only debt we, as a nation, should be paying back, at all, is the national debt, the money the government borrowed for the running of the country.

Tell the banks to get stuffed and sort their own mess out.

We are paying out to gamblers - the UNSECURED bondholders - when we do NOT have to.

So far all you have said is not to burn them as this would lock us out of the markets. Can you expand further on this, for us simple folks like.

Ah sure feckit just pay them. its less hassle. just let the taxpayer, the old,the disabled, the children, the students take the pain.
in return, get you head patted by the European Elites, be feted for being the best kid in the class and get your picture on the cover of Time magazine.;)

To put it into context on a smaller scale, go into your local bookies tomorrow and place €50 on a horse in any race. your horse is at odds of 20/1
your horse finishes last. tomorrow evening return to the bookie and demand your money back.
The bookie not only gives you back your €50 but also gives you the cash you would have won if your horse finished first, €1000.
he borrows this €1000 from a bigger bookie with a promise to pay him back €1100.
The bookie is terrified if he does'nt do this you will not return to him again.
this is the exact concept that unsecured bondholders are now being paid, just its on a mind-boggling scale.

P.S. how long do you think your bookie would remain in business...;)
