Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi all,

Any of you familiar with Glasnevin Cemetery? Are the "South Section" and "St Patricks" big areas?

    Thanks

St Patrick's is probably the largest section. Judging from the map, it takes up something like a quarter of the cemetery. The south section is smaller. If you intend to search for a grave without a grave number, you will have a fair bit of ground to cover in the St Patrick's section. With a grave number, however, it is far easier. You are probably aware that you can search for burials in Glasnevin on the Glasnevin Trust website? http://www.glasnevintrust.ie/genealogy/
When you find the record it gives the grave reference number.

Hi Elizabetha, I have family buried in Glasnevin as well as Mount Jerome too.

My family members are buried in the St Pauls section.

I have a visitor's map of Glasnevin Cemetery and it shows the different sections. I can scan it and send it to you if you like.

Thanks CHughes that would be great. Is it a very big cemetery and is it safe to walk around?

Very safe. I've never encountered anything untoward, although I did get a spooky scooby doo feeling one dark and rainy late evening in November last year.

There is a visitors centre at the front desk who are normally very helpful. If you arrive up saying "I'm looking for my long lost relative - Mary Smith, died March 1904" they will normally be able to do the look up, get you a reference and send you in the right direction with a map. I've scanned it in and uploaded it to a thread on the forum here before but I can't find it at the moment. If you arrive up and ask them to give you references for 15 of your great-great-great aunts and uncles and don't have names and/or years I think they will send you off to do the searches yourself.

In general there are normally a few people pottering around the graveyard any time I've been there, including a handful of staff. It's not exactly busy, but I don't think it would be seen as a dangerous place.

It is quite big and the lines of graves aren't always straight so you would be well advised to take your bearings every few minutes as you walk to your destination and make sure you are still on the correct track.

Last year I took my car GPS with me and took coordinates for the various family graves we have there. Real soon now I'm going to turn them into a map and distribute to family members - I reckon it's a good way for people to find their way about without getting too lost, although you need to turn the audio down as you don't want mourners to be hearing "at the next opportunity turn left" all the time.

The RDS show 'Back to our Past' will have a lot of stands and I'd say Glasnevin Cemetary staff should be there too. A phone call to them would confirm for anyone who just wants to enquire before going to the cemetary.

Great idea! I'm sure the voice might even produce more embarrassing words like 'you've gone too far, go back'! :o
