Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Thought this was brilliant. Fair play to her (and him).

Not sure i can imagine too many 78 year olds, that would be willing to, let alone able to, scale an airport fence, and run towards the Runway.

Should she be commended or punished?

Woman (78) arrested on airport runway
SECURITY fears have been raised at Shannon Airport after a 78-year-old pensioner and an anti-war campaigner were able to breach the perimeter by apparently climbing over a fence.
Margaretta D'Arcy (78), a playwright and peace campaigner, and Niall Farrell (59), a member of Galway Alliance Against War, were spotted by air traffic controllers as they made their way to the runway shortly after 4pm.
They got to the edge of the runway before they were arrested.
The pair said they wanted to stage a "non-violent peaceful action" to mark the 11th anniversary of the US presence in Afghanistan. Ms D'Arcy also planned to scatter the ashes of her late partner, John Arden, on the runway. However, it is understood that she didn't manage to do this before her arrest.
Ms D'Arcy and Mr Farrell were taken to Shannon garda station for questioning and were later released without charge. A file is being prepared for the DPP.
It is the latest in a series of security breaches at the airport by anti-war campaigners. Fianna Fail transport spokesman Timmy Dooley said he was concerned that such incursions could make it into the international media and negatively impact on decisions by airlines to come to Shannon.
Gardai said the perimeter fence did not reveal any obvious damage and it appeared the duo had scaled the fence.
Two inbound flights were slightly delayed as a result of the action. An airport spokesman said: "A security incident occurred and is being investigated by gardai."

EDIT- Think this is them in the centre of the photo. - LINK

Commended for trying to take action. and not let age stop her.
Punished for creating a security hazardthat could have ended very nasty indeed.

On the one hand pole-vaulting grannies are always a crowd-pleaser, on the other hand running onto a runway is dangerous and a silly thing to do.

Absolute spanners. On top of trespassing and potentially disrupting flights, what were they hoping to achieve?

Were they hoping Obama would hear about it and pull out of Afghanistan?

were they not protesting the use of shannon by the U.S. in their war in Afghanistan?
If they were, i say fair play.

Running out on to a runway is not a "fair play" kind of protest.

There's loads of ways of protesting that aren't f*cking stupid. This was not one of those ways.

they have been using those forms of protest for a long time now and nothing has come of it. this has at least brought the issue back to public attention for probably and unfortunately a short time.

That doesn't mean it's any less of a stupid way of doing things.

The same people would be in arms about how the airport should have had tighter security if she ended up getting run over while on her protest.

What a bright person you must be to find this brilliant "Fair play to her". Endangering her own life and that of others for all she knew. "Mad yoke" alright

    Well, that's ballsy.

If THEY can do it I fear to know who else could.
