Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Ha, you could be the worst player on the field but if you manage to put the ball in the net, you'll more than likely find yourself on Garth Crook's team of the week.

The BBC (when it comes to football) have been a long running joke for a while with the likes of Crooks, Lawrenson and even Shearer. No imagination, just spout the same old tired cliches over and over again. One of the better pundits they had, Dixon, is gone to ITV.

Their blatant xenophobic attitudes are ridiculous as well. They go to down on the likes of Suarez for diving yet Lawrenson finds time to make light of Bale's blatant piece of simulation at the weekend. And anyone notice that they didn't talk about the FA/Cole/Terry? (on MOTD 1 anyway, I didn't watch the second one) yet it was the biggest football story of the week by a mile. Joke of an organisation.

On my phone so don't know how to post a video but the funniest thing I've seen on RTE was Dunphy slating Crooks after he interviewed Eriksson following a bad England performance. Dunphy at his finest.

As Blatter said, the Beeb have long lost credibility when it comes to its football coverage and Crooks having a job so long highlights this.

Question for any wrestling fans on the soccer forum; is it just me or does Crooks remind you of former crossing dressing wrestler Golddust?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭keano_afc

    Its 7:19 in this vid.

Crooks is genuinely creepy, a clueless moron who looks like a toad. He's typical of the latest generation of BBC pundit. Lazy, joyless and completely pointless when it comes to opinion.

i thought when i read it first
that he was saying Morrison should have been picked for England before he was selected for Scotland
incredible that he doesn't know he has 23 caps for Scotland lol

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,709 ✭✭✭shrewdness

Nothing Crooks comes out with surprises me anymore, but this is incredible. How he is in his position in the BBC with such a clear lack of knowledge is baffling.

Have to agree with how the BBC are a running joke with the likes of Crooks, Lawrenson etc. Lawro's premiership predictions especially make me laugh, with how he almost always predicts a match between two big teams ending 1-1.

Garth Crooks a sanctimonious, humourless, knowledgeless plank with zero charisma, screen presence or presenting ability of any description.

Don't think I would agree about the rest of BBC though, don't mind Robbie Savage or Gary Lineker and I actually quite like the punditry on the Football League show from Leroy Rosenior and Steve Claridge.

Also prefer the BBC coverage generally to the RTE bitter and twisted panel and clueless ITV panel.

    Gareth Grooks is an awful!

Crooks is terrible. In all the time I've watched him he's made one good bit of analysis (can't even rememeber what it was, just that it happened - but it was a seriously good point you'd be expecting Zonal_Marking to make, not him)

Garth Crooks and Mark Lawrenson really are 2 of the biggest waste of spaces in football punditry ..

He got an OBE for his 'services to football punditry'

I seem to remember Sid Lowe rinsing him out on twitter a while back. Crooks has zero credibility. His eyes will surely pop out of his head one of these days also.

Only in football can so called "Analysts" like Crooks, Lawrenson and Dunphy have long and prosperous careers. It wouldnt be tolerated on any other kind of sports programme.

And i think we all know why Crooks still has a job at the BBC.

If we're giving out about BBC punditry in this thread, along with Crooks, Shearer and Lawrenson, I'd like to present Exhibit D for the prosecution:

Always thought Steve claridge was a good choice for the football league highlights having played for nearly every single football league side

Unlike the mindless automatons on the BBC at least the Dunphers seems somewhat capable of independent thought.

At least you get some sort of entertainment on RTE.

MotD would be immeasurably better if they got rid of the gob****es on the couch and John "EVERYTHING IS EXCITING" Motson and the rest of the commentators and just showed back to back football with crowd noise.

It's not difficult. You hire people who know about football and who are capable of affably demonstrating this on television. What the BBC need to do is stop underestimating the intelligence of their audience and grow a pair with regard to getting rid of or demoting the likes of Crooks and Lawro.

Did John giles not make a similar comment about gareth bale before?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

To be honest I can't listen to Giles anymore. I actually stopped listening to off the ball because of it. Each and every time he opens his mouth it's: "in my day, don reevie, matt busby, clough, all the great managers bill". It's like football has left him behind and he refuses or just can't adapt. What really annoyed me about Giles one evening on the premiership it was around the time of the infamous Balotelli fireworks incident. He was tearing into Mario over this saying he should just concentrate on football, he's a clown bill, an idiot and he should just grow up. Minutes later he was reminiscing about one of his old Leeds team mates who while plastered drunk after winning the cup stole a car from the car park and crashed it two miles down the road only to be taken out of it by the police still clinging onto his bottle of champaign.

The difference? Balotelli is an idiot, a child who should grow up. His Leeds team mate was a character!

As for the BBC well as long as people aren't switching off or complaining in their droves to the beeb then these people will still have a job.

The implication is not that his colour makes him a bad pundit, that would be ridiculous. It's that his colour has him in the job in the first place.

    What's Lawros excuse then? :-)

His tactical prowess is second to none though. Take a listen to his revolutionary 4-2-1-3-1 formation idea.

Not watched much boxing then I take it. Some awful "analysts" on both UK and US stations, and if you want to hear some of the worst boxing knoweldge being spouted during a bout then tune in to any Irish coverage where you have Jimmy Magee gleefully spewing out utter rubbish on a sport that he seems clueless about. He even muddles up the cliches he tries to use. Marty Morrisey is another joke when it comes to boxing coverage in Ireland.

I don't think people are having a go at him just because of this, if he was a good pundit/writer in general I don't think this thread would have been started. But he's not, he's generally clueless and the Morrison gaffe just typifies the man when it comes to football.

Considering he played for West Brom for a few seasons you'd think he'd have an idea about their current players.

  • Registered Users Posts: 487 ✭✭Thatsfootball

Worst thing about Croook's Team of the Week is the impossible formations. Always attacking players so he basically picks a 4-1-5!!
Although in his defence his interview skills are class! :p

Don't you mean a 4-1-1-5? This is a Crooks team after all.

I remember once seeing Crooks interview Sven about 30mins after the end of a game that qualified England for some major tournament.

So Garth starts by saying, "Well Sven I can confirm you have qualified for X".

Sven had a baffled look on his face as if to say "Yeah well thanks for that Garth, sure we didn't know, I was wondering what all the singing and cheering was for in the changing room and on the terraces".

Absolute baffoon of the highest order.
