Capsule air rising - not sure that's a good thing

I wonder whether they ought to be using Hydrogen rather than Helium? More lift, cheaper, and in this application there's very little risk of it catching fire (no ignition source).

Considering options, this jump might still not happen

He should just jump now and that's the record set, no difference in an extra 10,000 feet really, the record will be broke either way.

Heater isn't working properly so it could fog up completely

15-20 mins. He should be over 100,000ft in freefall before he opens his parachute. Insane!

Commentator said it could be an issue for the jump. They're troubleshooting.

Just said on the stream there, the team are considering the options regarding the visor. Safe inside the capsule but once outside you are doomed basically.

He can't jump until the rate of ascent nears zero

8k feet to jump, visor permitting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 541 ✭✭✭DEVEREUX

So what happens if they cant sort the visor heat issue how do they abort at this stage?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,029 ✭✭✭shedweller

113,000 feet. Past the existing record!

Its not just about the height its an attempt to reach the speed of sound in freefall so the higher the better, also as stated above he has to wait till rate of ascent is null

I reckon he comes back down in the capsule, which is coming back down using its own parachute.

When and why will the capsule cease to ascend?

The balloon can only go so high.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,728 ✭✭✭dilallio

What would happen if he farts at that altitude?

The surrounding air is so thin as to stop being buoyant enough to keep lifting the balloon and it reaches equilibrium. When that happens is beyond me.

Not sure really, maybe they have designed the balloon so that it will have reached its max expansion at around 120,000 feet and stop ascending. Something to do with the density of the air up there maybe?

Jesus I can't see this happening with that mask fogging up

Fascinating stuff. Outside temp. increasing as the insulation of the atmosphere disappears. Almost liveable!;)
