Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Time for a three day weekend?

Does anybody find that there's just not enough time left to unwind from a week's work?

In the 19th century "weekend" meant the period from Saturday noon to Monday morning (Source. As industrialisation and commercialisation gathered apace, leisure time increased with it and by the mid-20th century "weekend" came to refer to the period from Friday noon to Monday morning. In other words, the definition of "weekend" has evolved to our current understanding of it.

With society being far more commercialised now than it was in 1940, is it time to look at introducing a 4-day working week/3-day weekend across the EU?

Should the working week be reduced to four days? 76 votes

No, because most people won't want to/can't afford to take a 20% pay cut.

If two days are good enough for the Brits they're good enough for us.

They diddled it, Dylan. It's Florida and George W's election all over again.

By my calculations, from Saturday noon until some unspecified time on Monday morning isn't three days, although it it might be four days in Kerry.

I'd rather go back to a tribal hunter gatherer type society but I'll accept a 3 day weekend as an alternative.

They got it ar5eways with the 5-2 thing, can we not just change it to a 5 day weekend and a 2 day workweek? If we all agree, does that not make it so? Employ loads more people for those 2 days and make it an 18 hour day-that's still 32 hrs and the rest of the week can be to "recuperate". We can take it in turns to do our 2 days so everything stays open etc.

I think we should all go to that leper island Homer and Bart went to in Hawaii to get their electric needle treatment, 3 hours a day of excruciatingly painful electric needle treatment followed by relaxing for the rest of the day on the beach sipping cocktails.

4.5 day week, even a 4 day week is not a bad idea. However, lots of unforeseen consequences, I'm sure & some easily foreseeable ones too: like people saying; this will never work.

Obviously, some would use the extra half day or whole day off to work on developing something of their own.

5 days might as well be four sure we all might as well be rested for the default.

There are a lot of folks who have a 7 day weekend, how would these people conform to a 3 day weekend? would it be fair to ask them to decrease.

Personally, I've a 1 day weekend, so anything more would be a bonus. Since when is Saturday a day off? We work every saturday.

Why not reduce the number of weeks and increase the number of days per week? That way we could stillhave 5-day working weeks and 3-day weekends.

I vote for five day working week, three day weekends. Anyone good with sun rotation - don't all stick your hands up- know if that would work with a calender?

The majority of the Irish are diligent and hard working, no way would a four day week work, we're not Greece.

Make it a 3 and a half day working week and jobshare with those who are unfortunate enough not to be in useful employment at the moment. . .
