Hope someone can help me please as I'm in serious trouble with this one.

Windows update available yesterday evening for my Nvidia card so downloaded and installed, got up this morning and laptop won't boot. I've put in the Win 7 cd for start up repair but it's now in a continuous loop just telling me it cannot repair.

F8 doesn't allow me to go into safe mode. I'm now stuck in this loop.

Any help please to get this going would be so greatly appreciated

    Thanks!

System Restore didn't work. I rebuilt the bcd and then used the fixmbr and fixboot in cmd. Thought it should have fixed it but now it just goes into the Windows Boot Manger screen at start up with "A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged... etc.

    File: \windows\system32\winload.exe
    Status: 0xc0000428
Info: Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.

Stuck here unfortunately unless I can turn off the driver signature enforcement which I don't know how to do.

    Any suggestions?

You could boot from a linux cd,eg mint cdr livecd ,find winload.exe, change it to winload.exee ,reboot.
    OR ebcd ,http://www.prime-expert.com/ebcd/screenshot.php

    or see here
    http://www.thegeekprofessor.com/tips-and-tricks/hacks/windows7/turn-off-driver-signing-enforcement-in-windows-7/
disable driver signing from safe mode in windows 7

try that first ,before linux cd option.

sorry ,i just noticed you cant acess safe mode.

theres probably some way of editing the registry to
    disable driver signing enforement.http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/
    this has a registry editor.

Screwed here also I say. Cannot go into safe mode (f8) as it's not available. I've never in my life experienced such an issue as fixboot or/and fixmbr or restore always worked. Will never trust an update again from Nvidia!

Damn, feeling like I'm really screwed here. Anyway to retrieve the contents of my hdd to an external hdd?

    try this
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprohardware/thread/9b6eee60-855d-47cc-9927-acae3fb6f971/
free version, it seems to have option, switch off driver signing enforcement.
    http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/
i,ve never used it, i,m going by this line,
Try disabling signature check using easybcd free tool, that you can get from http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1
    quote;
Run easybcd, click advanced options button.

Enabling loading of unsigned drivers is security risk! ; end quote,

usually if you cant acess safe mode,
theres a hardware problem, or windows installation is missing essential boot up, files.

you can use mint or other livecd to copy to a usb drive,
livecd fits on 1 cdr disc .

    see here http://www.boot-disk.com/
    180meg windows live cd,
the advantage of linux mint is , it gives you acess to the net and can read any windows hd ,loads into ram
    in 3mins approx.
bring a cdr to a netcafe, make sure the pc has something like
imgburn ,free program, and a cdwriter, download iso, burn iso file to cd using imgburn.
IT s a good idea to have a livecd in a case, at some point
you,ll need it to recover data.
i just reinstall windows from hd partition every 2 years anyway.

Thanks will look into that. My biggest problem is that this is my only laptop in the house so must do the downloading on someone else's computer.

Also that easybcd tool you need to be in windows to use it. Remember I'm stuck on the book screen. Looks like I'll be getting mint!

    Thanks for the advice

Get the older version ,x86 ,
    http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=38
theres small distros, linux isos, run from a usb key,
in case you cant load the cdr
    http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/
    this is about 150meg,
can acess windows hd,has a net browser.
borrow a laptop or go to netcafe with a cdr disc.

IF you reinstall, install windows 7 os. into default directory, new install ,
c/;windows its unlikely you,ll lose any personal data,mp3s,photos.if its presently using c/:windows directory.
    IMPORTANT,
you must use install option ,
    use existing hd media,
DO NOT FORMAT DRIVE ; option ,
otherwise you,ll erase all your user data, pics, music.photos,
but you may need to reinstall some drivers,
and you,ll need to reinstall programs, chrome, firefox, service pack updates.

Might try this maybe. I had another small directory (30GB) for media files. Do use think I'll still have access to this if I reinstall like you said above. I remember doing this once and having a folder called windows.old in the c drive

IF u do install, no format , be really careful ,use existing media, any files you have should be ok,
as long as they are not in c windows, c, system32 directory.
it,ll ask you where to install ,c /windows, or
    NEW directory,choose c /windows.
note i did 2 restore os, installs, from hidden partition.
I LOST 3 drivers , had to reinstall drivers from sony support etc
i have no cdrom, i just use recovery, factory restore mode.windows 7,sony vaio.
is there at least 30gig free on drive c.

i cant gaurantee you wont lose some data.
    i never used ,installed win7 from cdrom,dvd.

just be really careful ,if you have any important
    or valuable files.

ok thats good, best practice, put all data, important
    files on partition,2, D ;/
That way if windows crashes , you wont use much, except maybe some apps,or driver files.
i just backup important files to usb drive external, including drivers,
    backup drivers with drivermax.
    ITS free.
