    found this washed up on portmarnock beach today anyone know what it is?

    dont mind the date the camera reset itself.. pics were taken today!

    Wow well done,

    I have yet to catch one from the shore, they seem to peak at my mark around mid june to july then they move off,

    didn’t think they would still be around at this time of year but there you go.

    Didn't catch it mate
    It washed up on beach
    Young tope tend to stay near shore all year round

    a small tope allright, try fishing the wicklow beaches this time of year for the big ones:) great craic

    Thanks for putting me right on that Dodder, the Tope looked so fresh I thought it was still alive I have since reread Sarah’s OP and feel such a plum now.

    Deffo a tope, you can tell but the nose. It looks like its nearly see through.... Sad to see it dead because the come in to spawn this time of year with the cold weather.

    If the idea of tope in Irish waters bothers you, how about Six gill shark like this one caught just off the Clare coast?:D

    Can't stand people like that just for a record of a fish
    Put it back they are rare enough as it is

    Don't disagree with that it should have been returned alive, but then I feel the same way about any fish of supposed trophy size be it a shark, pike, trout or perch.


    But as for the Blunt nose six gill shark being rare, thankfully it appears that may not be the case as there has been talk of it's conservation status being upgraded from near threatened to Least Concerned.

    I agree, from what I heard the skipper wasnt to happy about it either, he wanted to release it but the (dutch) man I think wanted to claim his record. The same skipper has caught a good few since and all have been returned.
