Wouldne be too bothered about this, Westport is number one on list. Its a lovely place in fairness, always does well on surveys and was voted best place to live in Ireland but its shopping is hardly the best in the country

What a dismal performance for the city.

Isn't it interesting to note that the criteria for judging included "They understand that lower car parking charges will increase frequency of town visits", "They understand that car parking accessibility is crucial to family visits to the town" and - "They have a welcoming car parking cost and enforcement policy".

Probably the point about "They have retained a significant proportion of retail activity in the town or city centre" is the most significant of all. Waterford City Council are failing on all these points.

    Top 100 Towns & Cities

100 top towns? There aren't 100 genuine towns in the country!

This kind of survey is highly subjective of course, the way people feel about Waterford City at the moment means any shortcoming (and there are many) will be leapt upon whereas if things were sunnier generally those same failing would tend to be overlooked or downplayed. People are not happy with the state of the place and it shows.

The KEY DETERMINATES graph was interesting - public transport features as a concern for 53% the public and yet money is being put into "anti-car" schemes in Waterford to boost public transport while car parking issues rates at 66% and the cost of same continues to rise so people tend to shop outside paid parking zones. The rating for shoppers who travel from outlying regions puts emphasis on parking needless to say - 70% so if Waterford wants to be a regional draw it needs to become car friendly.

Waterford joint lowest on question of competitive parking prices.

Amusingly they classify Kilkenny as a city.

Final thought - as Dungarvan and Tramore are significantly higher rated in most respects
maybe the loss of the City council is no big deal ;)

This survey seems odd to me. Can anyone say that for a retail experience they would visit any of the top ten places. Why would Tramore come in at 13??? Is there a retail area I'm not aware of.

This survey seems to be more along the lines of nice place to live as opposed to excellence in retail. Skerries,Clonakilty, Killarney and Westport were all in the shake up in the recent best place to live contest and they all feature in the top ten here

I was in Dungarvan for the hurling final yesterday, and I was just remarking to others with me that the town had done a good job of cleaning itself up in recent years, and that the likes of Paul Flynn and The Tannery restaurant must be bringing in plenty of people. Didn't think Tramore would rate as high - fair play to them also.

I find the citizens view on page 56 interesting though. People seem to feel strongly that the city is a safe place, family friendly and well maintained with well priced parking which is great.

However, I'd be concerned by the fact that people don't seem to rate it as their first place to visit for shopping or for dining & entertainment, don't feel that there are a lot of things to see and do and don't feel that there are a large number of quality retail stores to choose from.

Not necessarily all good or all bad, but plenty of feedback that the relevant stakeholders should start mulling over.

Sligo & Drogheda are not Cities. They just call themselves that.

Kilkenny was permitted, by law, to call itself a City. It does not get the same entitlements though as other cities.
