Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

But the child knows her mum is reading porn in public and in front of her. My opinion is her mum should have a bit of tact!

That silly book is just a pale shadow of real porn, rather like a soother for women to put in their mouth while they are dreaming of and longing for the real thing ---

That't their issue, obviously this woman is happy to be seen with the book because she doesn't think she's doing anything wrong or that it is anything to feel embarrassed about.

Would you read a novel which had some erotic elements in it in public?

Yes course I would. My point is it's not the content that's the issue, it's the tact of some people, I wouldn't read playboy in public not because I'm not entitled to or because of the content or because im embarrassed too, its because I have more tact about me than to read porn in public and in front of children.

Reading a novel with some erotic elements is not the same as reading a world known porn mag like playboy or a world known porn book!

In this situation having tact is about doing things so your child is innocent to it.

I've read the first two books and I really wouldn't class them as porn! I probably wouldn't have brought them out to read wHile having coffee etc but it has obviously taken the world by storm and I don't see the problem with other people doing so!
    Maybe it's just me :)

Can you set out the differences between a novel with erotic elements and a porn book? Does Joyce's Ulysses fall in the first category or the second? What about a Jackie Collins book? A Mills and Boon book? J.K. Rowling's latest book?

Erotica consists of the portrayal of sexuality with high-art aspirations, focusing on feelings and emotions, while pornography involves the depiction of acts in a sensational manner, with the entire focus on the physical act.

    From wikipedia...

I don't know which one's my child considers to be porn, I'd have to prepare a quiz. Will I give them a list, and they can place a line through which ones they consider to be porn? Can you provide a list of "potential" porn novels to get me started?

Nope as a parent you should have the tact to know which one your child would consider to be porn.

And the tact in the first place not to read it in front of your child.

But that's just my opinion everyone to their own.

    Just for your information.
Playboy is not a porn mag.
Playboy is a titty mag with a questionable lifestyle aspect.
Porn is explicit. Graphic. Like full on blown up genitals. Train enters tunnel stuff.
Playboy is like a men's interest magazine plus a few pics ala nudies climbing out of a bathtub stuff. No vaginas and no men in sight. Mostly it's interviews with footballers or reviewing that new super car nobody who's reading will ever come near in their lifetime. Playboy is selling illusions to men. Bit like the gossip mags for ladies.

Not that I care about these definitions much. But I do want to make the point cos i think there would be a difference between reading the playboy and 'reading' a full on porn mag in public.

The very fact that you describe playboy as porn shows me maybe you're views are a little nineteen fifties here?

Honestly... Obviously the 15yr old doesn't give a fcuk.

She's probably too busy trying to figure out how many people finger banged her last Friday night after she downed a naggin of vodka while out knacker drinking.

Yes started to read it but thought it was rubbish tried a few time to continue reading it because everyone else was reading it, I assumed I was missing something by not liking it. Realise now the only reason it was popular was because the media told us it was popular.

Yes. Social media and book shops describe the book as an erotic novel? Like playboy is described as a men's mag. Or porn is described as erotic movies.

What's all this got to do with my point of the woman not having any tact in (my opinion) about reading porn in front of her child?

It's not about a women reading it, or the contents of what she is reading it's about her reading it in front of her child who knows what her mother is reading, showing a bit of tact!!

I brought playboy into it because I wouldn't just sit in a public place reading playboy in front of children not because of the contents of playboy (because I'm the only one looking inside it) but because everyone knows what I'm reading.

Like her child and everyone else knows what she's reading. Nothing wrong with it she is allowed to do what she wants in public and in front of her child, just saying personally id have a bit more tact in public and in front of my children.

A woman was reading 50 Shades on her Kindle on the Luas beside me a couple of weeks ago. I know because I saw the words 'inner goddess' a couple of times out of the corner of my eye.
