Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Root my HTC one V?

Hey, I am thinking about finally rooting my HTC one V. I was just wondering is it really worth doing? Has anyone here done it and have you noticed an improvement in battery longevity etc or other advantages you supposedly get from the custom ROM(s) you switched to? Or are the differences it makes having a rooted phone and custom ROM and all that pretty negligible? I mean so far I've been reasonably happy with the phones performance and what have you, so if it's not gonna make a reasonably noticeable improvement I'll prob just plod along as I have been I guess...

    So, worthwhile doing?

Also, presuming I choose to go ahead I was just wondering if anyone that has done it before could link me to a simple enough step by step guide to walk me through it please? Or if anyone has any general or specific advice related to it?

    Thanks for the help. :)

    Strobe,

I happen to have a HTC One V, but decided not to root it.

My wife has a Desire S with minimal internal memory which was always filling up. I rooted that so I could free up the memory by linking the internal memory to a hidden partition on the SD card which solved her "not enough memory" hiccups every two days.

I never seen the need to root the One V as I find there isn't too much bloat on the HTC Sense GUI and there's tons on internal memory for all the apps I use, plus being Android I can install most apps not on the play store without the need to root.

HTC do make it easy to root their phones by allowing access to the user to unlocking the bootloader which helps a lot in rooting a phone.

In the end you need to think whether rooting will benefit you, there's some great mods out to run on rooted android phones, and some apps that need root to run, however I've found that most of these are of little use as android moves through the release versions (one big reason to root early android phones was for tethering the mobile broadband on the phones for use with pc but now most phones have a wifi hotspot option)

Remember that while HTC are possibly the easiest android phones to root (thanks to the htcdev bootloader unlock) there is still the possibility of bricking the phone, so proceed at your own risk

Probably the best guide out there can be found here

It doesn't answer any questions regarding improvement in performance but hope it helps none the less
