Buying a Van

I'm thinking of buying a Van like a Ford Transit or similar and hoping to pick up some removal/delivery work and need some
    advise.

Should I buy new or look for something a year or two old?

Should I lease or buy? I'm not currently Vat registered?

What should I look out for with second hand vans?

Should I buy private, auction or dealer?

    Any opinions/advise welcome

    Thanks

You dont need to be VAT registered, but you do need to be registered as a sole trader or you wont be able to tax it....and it'll be for commercial purposes only...unless you go down the private route..
Plenty of good s/h vans out there...because of the above....;)

Have a look at the Renault master as an alternative to the transit. The 2004 model up is a great van little goes wrong with them. As for tax you would really need to have a sole trader or ltd to tax the van commercially as it would not be feasible to tax transits etc privately as the engine size would be way to big. Just seen that if you are looking for 2010 upwards the new model master is out just some advice get the 125 or 150bhp model as the 100bhp is just too underpowered for the size of the van.

You say you are hoping to pick up some work ? unless you have guaranteed work I wouldnt buy anything.
There are so many ads out there offering removal/delivery service ect, I know experienced couriers with good vans parked up because they cant get work.
Its not just a case of having a van means you get work.

If you want to just get out there and have a go I can respect that but dont make any major investment, there are plenty of businesses closing down every day and people pay very little for services now.

If it was me, I would buy the cheapest LWB Hi roof Transit or similar that I could find.

Thanks for all the advise guys.

I think I'm going to go with the Man and Van thing. Try to pick up some work from local businesses and house removals etc. I'll also look into any courier opportunities that come up. To be honest, there's got to be some work out there if
you look for it especially coming up to Christmas. It's worth a shot.

    Anyway a couple more questions:

    1. Is a LWB a definite requirement for courier work?

    2. For Man and Van stuff, how should I charge? By the mile or by the hour. An examples of going rates?

This is kind of similar to what I'm considering at the moment, I drive a car at the moment but am considering buying a van as they are cheaper to run and never have any passengers. Something like a focus van or something. I see it mentioned above about taxing it privately, I'm not a sole trader or have a trade. Would this be the best thing to do? Is there much paperwork involved?
