Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. One would be an excellent return. Last time out was the first time we've ever won more than one

I think conlon is already qualified for Rio so that target is already achieved. I would think the team will be unhappy not to qualify anyone else.

We will qualify more but maybe not through Doha. World medals are the hardest to come by. There are further European places on offer next year

If we won 2 medals that would be seen as a good tournament for Ireland

The European Nations mens' Hockey Championship kicks off in London this Friday with two Pool A matches, Netherlands v. Spain at 17.15 and England v. Russia at 19.30.
Ireland have their opening game at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday v. France. Whatever about anything else, this is the one match we must hope to win. We get a step closer to Rio if neither France nor Russia win the championship. By the same token we should be hoping that England beat Russia.

European showjumping starts today with the speed round. Top 3 scores count. Poor start by Denis Lynch with 8 faults

Forget about the medals, the first aim is Olympic qualification

We need to be in first 3 of Ireland, GB, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium

Irvine will be the interesting one to watch. Paddy Barnes is already qualified at that weight so its a big decision to decide who stays at home.

Must be difficult for the hockey association to plan. Clearly they must plan as if they have qualified but if they end up not qualifying they have wasted these resources. Also early qualification would help with the search for sponsors.

We are in 8th place after todays first round in Aachen. GB, Spain and Italy are ahead of us on the qualification table at the moment.

Less than a fence between GB in 3rd and Ireland in 8th. All to play for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Iffy start to the 2nd round. 4 for Allen, 8 for Brodericks. Swiss are finished and added 0 to their overnight score

Of those we care about after 2 riders each of the 2nd round

    Italy 9.23 + 0 + (8) = 9.230
    GB 6.99 + 4 +(12) = 10.99
    Spain 7.58 + 4 + (9) = 11.580
    Ireland 9.96 + 4 + (8) = 13.963
    Swiss 14.23 + 0 + 0 + 0 + (4) = 14.230
    Belgium 11.5 + 4 + (4) = 15.5
    Denmark 12.27 + 0 + 1 + 4 + (20) = 17.27

We can't afford for Greg's 8 to score. Still less than a fence away from top 3 though

As with tradition in recent times, we are having a bad second day in the European Championships. A third Olympics in a row without a showjumping team would be a pretty shocking record in all honesty. Hopefully they can turn it around.

Edit: Clear round for Cian O'Connor to settle the nerves a little :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Huge clear from Cian O'Connor! Back in it now lads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

8 faults for the 3rd Italian rider meaning they will add 8 at least to this round score.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Denmark would be major challengers if they had a full team of good combinations..... they had a clear and one single time penalty from the first 2 riders, then their third member racked up a whopping 20 penalties. Still, they need to be watched for now (they inly added 5 penalties in total today).
Belgium could be eliminated after today which would be a bonus. We are still teetering though and need a big round from Dennis to qualify for tomorrow's phase.

I'll update the totals after 3 riders. As of now, we're in the Olympic qualification spot

We could do with Sweden qualifying for the top 10 to knock one of our rivals out too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

5 penalties for the 3rd Spanish rider. They drop below Ireland provisionally.

Indeed it would be a bonus..... it's so close though. Dennis can't afford more than one fence down or we could be potentially in trouble.

    Another clear round for Britain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

    After 3 Riders

    GB 10.99 (4)
    Ireland 13.96 (8)
    Swizz 14.23 (Finished)
    Spain 16.58 (9)
    Italy 17.23 (8)
    Denmark 17.27 (finished)
    Belgium 19.5 (4)

Bracketed score is the current discard.

Switzerland and Denmark are in fantastic positions as their scores can't be added to further. One fence down and we drop below both. Britain are looking strong also, as long as they avoid a disaster with their final rider.

Absolutely. Swiss in great spot. A 4 for UK and a clear for Ireland and we'd go ahead of them. It's that close

Most teams have their strongest rider going last. Not sure that's the case with Ireland

Yeah, Greg's 8 was a really hard blow for us, a 4 wouldn't have been so disastrous. It leaves Dennis with a lot to do, hopefully he can produce a good round.
We aren't in an enviable position.

Clear for Belgium..... it's make or break now for Ireland!! :o

4 for dennis. We finish on 17.96

What do we need to happen now?

It does mean that one of the our competitors will lose out. Belgium defo gone.

4 for Spain or Italy and they could miss out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Phew..... we are still alive for another day it seems. We need to up our game big time tomorrow though. Clear rounds are what it's about.... we don't get enough of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

What do we need to happen now?

We are safe until tomorrow, but won't be inside the Olympic qualifying spots ahead of the final round. It's so close though.

What do we need to happen now?

We have to wait to see how everyone finishes now but we'll still be within a fence of Olympic qualification. Every fence does matter.

Oh and Italy are gone. They won't qualify for Olympics

    Italy are out too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Belgium are still alive by the way.... a single fence down for the Spanish would allow them in.... I feel it would be in our interest for the Spanish to pull off a good round here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Clear for Spain, meaning Belgium are out. I think we have more chance of beating them as they are a bit hit-and-miss like ourselves. Denmark too are beatable, they rely on two riders too much. Hopefully we can make hay tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

How the Olympic qualifiers stand after the 2nd round

    10.99 GB
    14.23 Switzerland
    16.58 Spain
    17.27 Denmark
    17.96 Ireland

    Belgium and Italy eliminated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

If we are at our best we can overhaul Spain and Denmark. Not underestimating them, Spain are solid enough in recent times and Denmark only need another round like today to make it through easily.
But can we finally put in a good round in a team event when it REALLY matters.... that's the question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,479 ✭✭✭finbarrk

I f Lynch hadn't the unlucky last fence down we would be in the 2nd qualifying position. All to jump for tomorrow!

    GB look good.
Switzerland had a poor speed class but rebounded brilliantly
Spain have one superstar but 3 average riders
Denmark have 2 good riders, one average and one poor. They need everything to go right for the 3
We have 2 superstars and 2 good riders. Clear from Betram and Greg yesterday. Clear from Cian today. Dennis was unlucky with the last today. We need 3 clears tomorrow and if we get them, we'll qualify

True, and Bertram had an unlucky 4 faults too.....though Cian was fortunate enough to go clear so we can't complain too much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Show jumping back on at 4pm today. 13 individuals go and then we're into the team competition. Ireland go 2nd of the 10 (reverse order basically).

It effectively means we have to have one fence less down than 2 of Spain, Switerland and Denmark.

If we have 2 less fences down than GB, we'd leap frog them too

Time faults likely won't be an issue for Ireland but Denmark & Spain had 1 yesterday. Another one for Denmark would be enough for them to drop below us but it will likely be all about the fences.

    Standings
    10.99 GB
    14.23 Switzerland
    16.58 Spain
    17.27 Denmark
    17.96 Ireland

    Day 2 scores
    4 GB
    0 Switzerland
    9 Spain
    5 Denmark
    8 Ireland

The showjumping from Aachen is live on TG4 from 4pm by the way.

    Edit : 4.45 in fact

I have a good feeling about today. Good luck to the Irish team!

No clears yet amongst the individuals. That means fences will fall amongst the teams and we'll have plenty of changes throughout the day.

Denmark under some pressure now. Their first horse refused twice and was eliminated.

    9 faults for the Spaniard.

Clear for Switzerland..... they are almost home now you would think.

We need a good round from Greg now to pile the pressure on Denmark and Spain.

Indeed and that type of pressure can lead to more mistakes.

It's really up to the three Irish lads to do the business now (though that opening four faults could prove to be not particularly damaging in the long run if the Danes and Spaniards were to mess up.....let's wait and see)
