Is his qualifying spot an 'Irish' spot or a personal one?
As in, can Ireland send our next best in his place, or does it go to the next best non-qualified runner wherever they're from?

Its a personal spot. There's no 'next best' in the marathon as anyone who gets the time is in (limits to 3 per nation)

Ireland will have a couple of lads in it. Maybe even 3

    Thanks.

I see from this page that the Men's qualifying time is 2h 17min.

If a country has say 10 guys that have run faster, is it the 3 that ran the time first, or the 3 that have the fastest PBs? Or is it down to the country's OC to choose by whichever method they want?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Down to each country to choose. Ireland had 4 women qualified for London and there was a bit of controversy over the 3 picked but that was bound to be the case

There's a list to selection criteria there but as mentioned, it wasn't clear cut

BTW I was talking with someone involved in irish hockey at the weekend. They've been told, informally, that South Africa have definitely decided not to send a team to the Olympics. The tournament in October isn't a qualifier (as such) but the African Cup of Nations and they still want to win that. If they do, its a very real possibility that Ireland will benefit.

It's on the same time as the Oceania Cup. Let's hope they beat Egypt

Lightweight Mens Double Skull and Lightweight Womens Double Skull into the Semi Finals .

So both crews into the last 12 , just finish 11th upward and we are Olympic bound . Fingers Crossed

The womens double were 4th and don't make the semis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Sanita Puspure was 2nd in her QF and goes through. Top 9 is what she needs for Rio

Good day for Team Ireland with 3 of the 4 boats still in with a great chance.

I believe the odds for the two lightweight crews qualifying for Rio are even better than that. They're already in the top 12 and the top 11 qualify for the Olympics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Yeah, I said that above. I was just pointing out that a top 3 in the semi guarantees it

If they don't reach the final, the pairs need to finish in top 5 (of 6) to make Rio. Sanita needs top 3 in the B final (if she doesn't make it into the A final)

Oh yes sorry, didn't see the posts above.

Looking really good for the two lightweight crews then. They could conceivably finish last in their semi and still qualify for Rio. I presume it's the slowest boat of the 12 who will fail to qualify?

No , the A final on Saturday will be made up of the top 3 crews from each Semifinal . The bottom 3 crews from those semi finals will contest the B Final on Friday . Who ever finishes last in that race is out .

It will be a vicious race fought to the last stroke , can be very tough to watch for supporters .

Right, it would be preferable for the two lightweight crews to make the final then. They could concentrate solely on trying to win a medal, with the pressure of qualification off their backs.

Absolutely, but the pressure and competition is just enormous . They are only two lightweight rowing events in the Olympics - the lightweight 4 and the lightweight double skull , making a total of 6 athletes .

That means that in the Olympic cycle year all lightweights from all other events converge on those two events .

For example Sinead Jennings in our double skull has won gold silver and bronze as a single sculler in past world championships but as that is not an Olympic event she opted for the double this year . And that is the story all across the sport to try to get one of those coveted spots

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

The men's double have all 5 opening heat winners in the semi. That's how tough it is

However if they do qualify, it'll be some achievement for a team that's only together a few months. And a great sign ahead of Rio for that team

Ireland mens double were 5th. Onto the B final. Only have to beat one crew to make Rio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

The Lightweigth womens double were 4th. So close to a final. They were overtaken in the last 500. Hopefully they can recover and get the top 5 spot in the B final

Photo of Lightweight Women 2X crossing the line in 4th place. Means they must race again for Olympic qualifying place.

They should be fine in that B final. They had the fastest time today of the six crews who have gone through to it.

Yeah, but 3 of the 6 gave up (presumably to save energy) and the others were close enough. I think they'll do it but who knows with sport?

Indeed, nothing is ever certain is sport but their results this week would suggest they should be good enough to avoid last place. The men's pair's chances seem a little more dicey though, could definitely be touch and go for qualification.

The women's lightweight double won the B final at the Lucerne regatta a few weeks back and all the usual suspects were at that event , so they should be good enough to qualify. But lets not count our chickens just yet .....

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭marienbad

The womens lightweight B Final for Olympic qualification start list is ...

Again we are in a seeded lane as one of the fastest times . All our women have to do is beat one other crew and we are qualified .

Easier said than done though as a lot of the crews will have targeted this race for qualification and saved themselves throughout the regatta , Whereas our team gave it every thing in every race in an effort to make the final '

Add in the tension and the nerves and we have a nailbiting few minutes .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Sanita Puspure was 5th in her SF and tbh wasn't really in the hunt for a top 3 spot. She needs to finish in the top 3 in the B final now and that looks like it'll be a tall order

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

We qualified a boat for the Olympic men's lightweight double sculls after Paul and Gary placed 5th in the B final this morning :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

The women's lightweight double also through. 3rd on the B final

Great news to add 4 to our Olympic team today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Sinead Jennings and Claire Lambe finished 3rd in the women's lightweight double sculls B final for 9th place overall and again qualifying a boat for the Olympics. Terrific morning!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭marienbad

Brilliant racing from Aiguebelete both the lightweight mens double and the lightweight women's double qualified for Rio . Mission accomplished at this regatta .

Two great races , the men came form last place in the last 200 to edge out the Greeks . The women led all the way and were never in any danger and were pipped in the last 50 for Ist and 2nd.

Now lets hope Sunita makes it a treble , tall order though.

South Africa have said if they win their competition they won't send a team so we've 2 chances

In that event I would think the IOC, in pursuance of their policy of spreading representation around, would nominate another African team.

Goes to the team next in the rankings which is us.

It could change but the qualifying document doesn't mention one qualifier from Africa, it mentions the continental champions. Odd one but hopefully we aren't relying on it

No, the rules on this one are crystal clear and binding..... if South Africa win the tournament and reject their quota, it goes to the next unqualified nation in the World League (regardless of which continent they come from). So that would be Ireland. However, Egypt are arguably the favourites to win the African tournament anyway on recent form.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,463 ✭✭✭marienbad

Sanita Puspure in the Women's Single Skull B Final on at 11.50 this morning . She needs a top 3 finish to qualify for the Olympics . Tough ask but doable .

C'mon Sanita we are all rooting for you !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 659 ✭✭✭KevinK

Sanita finished 5th and hasn't qualified for the Olympics yet.

Very interesting race, Sanita went out to an early lead which she until about 200m to go. Unfortunately the Irish rower ended up fifth in a blanket finish less than 2 seconds behind the winner and about .6 of a second behind Austria in third.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,310 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

Watched the race earlier. Shame for Sanita. She was a good bit ahead of the 4th place rider with 500 to go but the whole field came flying back at her

Hopefully she can get one of the final spots like London

    SAILING:
London Times, 25th August 2015: " Olympic sailing events will be moved out of polluted Guanabara Bay into the Atlantic unless Rio authorities take steps to clean up its waters." This should suit Annalise Murphy very well. Conditions, one imagines, would be rougher, and she revelled in rough conditions in 2012.

In Slamom Canoe, 19 year old Liam Jegou has qualified for the semi finals in C1 in the world championhips. He's one of 30 in the semis with the top 10 qualifying for the final. He was ranked 28th overall in the semis (10th in his run)

More importantly for us is that he's hoping to be in the top 10 nations. Only 16 nations qualified for the semis but most have multiple canoeists in

Liam will likely need to have the ride of his life and hope several others have bad, bad days. The race is on Sunday morning between 9 and 10.

Big crowd of marathon runners heading over to Berlin next sunday. If conditions are good youd expect at least one to make the time for rio.
