Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah , just finished watching it. Some nasty stuff happening right there. I can't see something like that being popular with all the amazing old style courses in the area.

Great Doc - Too one sided , but that is what it is about.

Fair play to that lad who did it, so much of his own time, for very little - but the truth.

I always thought he was an arrogant juan ker, now I know for sure he is and definitely wouldn't play it now.
Also has to be said his head green keeper Paul o Conor came across really badly, and it wasn't a great advertisement for Sol construction either, both Irish btw.

The Irish are up to their eyes in this.

Good documentary, but that final piece (the maker of the film trying to call Trump from a phonebox) was just silly. No need for it.

Money talks, corruption rules. Sickening to watch Trump's operation intimidate to force those people from their homes with the help of the local council it appears. Trump later made a statement that he wouldn't be looking for CPOs on the houses but whats the betting he would have got them

It was a reference to a famous add (I think ?).

Or some deep symbolic ****, the hopelessness of coins versus an evil empire , (no drink tonight :p), real golf in am.

I'm from Aberdeenshire, the course is about 20 miles from where I grew up. I lived in Aberdeen up until last year, nobody I know wanted the thing built, the whole project was hugely unpopular and there was massive public opposition, but Trump had everyone bought. All the local papers did was report about how great it was going to be and run smear stories about the protesters and the local residents. Loads of people reported rough treatment from the security staff or even from the police if they went near the site. People who were just out walking on public ground were quickly intercepted by guys in dark Range Rovers and warned not to go near it or face reprisals. Well shady.

Just FYI, the first course was opened but the hotel and villas still haven't been started. Trump is holding off on it until the Scottish Government agrees to cancel plans for a windfarm just off the coast, which knowing Alex Salmond and his cronies, they will probably do. Oh yeah and the course costs £195 for a single round, which means that the vast majority of local golfers can't even afford to play on it.

    I'm from Aberdeenshire

Interestingly, WoundedRhino, I've received some unpleasant comments (on my blog) from golfers in Aberdeen who all swear blind that everyone in the area was 100% behind the course and, clearly, I didn't know what I was talking about - I've put up three separate blogs about the Trump's course.

It may well be one of the best in the world (golf mags are raving about it) but it was a disgrace how it was developed and no respect for the environment (nothing new there).

I haven't seen the programme yet, so will have to make do with this personal favourite Trump video from YouTube

Watched this last night, and all throughout construction I knew there was opposition from the locals but it really was an eye opener seeing all the underhand tactics used by trump and his entourage. The treatment of the locals was nothing short of disgraceful and very little if anything at all was done to help them. No doubt that trump has a world class course there but the damage to the locals lives and livelihoods should be worth more. It goes to show that if you throw enough money at any problem, it goes away. And talk about not being sympathetic to the land - other course architects (namely greg norman at doonbeg, mc clay-kidd at macrihanish dunes) were not allowed to touch certain dunes due to their flora and fauna etc. yet trump completely levels the ones at his site. His workmen wildly deviated from the plans and the mounds of sand put up in front of that womans house blocking her view was terrible. The model for all them villas just looks completely out of place on that land and countryside and with a bit of luck they don't get built. Judging by the reviews and the photos, the course looks amazing but I think if I was in that neck of the woods, after what I'd seen last night, I'd keep on going up the road to Cruden Bay.

    Anyway. Sorry for detour.

Was great if depressing viewing. It certainly would put you off ever wanting to play the course.

Even my wife, who would rather stick pins in her eyes than watch golf was getting passionate watching this.

Whatever about dodgy land deals, etc... the whole atmosphere with the local police was certainly the most disturbing aspect of the situation.

Agreed, but in fairness to him he ended up falling out with Trump after Trump demanded that he build big mounds of soil behind houses. O'Connor apparently refused and we saw last night how Trump deals with other people's opinions. Think he took Trump to court for unfair dismissal.

Not sure if its kosher posting this link but it should be useful given the digital switchover.

    filmon.com

Its basically a live streaming site of the main UK FTA channels, including the non Northern Ireland BBC2.

not hard at all, an excuse me please would do fine, not to come out with idle threats. And it took him a year to realise dump is a complete stain .

Recorded it and watched it last night, very well edited and extrememly frustrating viewing, frustration on behalf of the local but also it was (as expected) very one sided, it was all doom and gloom with not a single person apart from Trump wanting the course there.
Bottom line is no development of that magnitude will birth without a level of unease from some stakeholder.
Don't get me wrong, Trumps antics are unforgivable, the police in particular.
I was disappointed at the Irish lad's involvement but there was no need to leave in the comment about the price of the camera equipment, it was left in alluding to intimidation/something could happen that expensive stuff etc.
Pleased just to read this thread and read about him eventually leaving due to the very sad creations of mounds of earth around folks homes, just a demonsatation that it was all one sided as the guy left in November 2010 which could easily have been incoroprated into the film.
Not a balanced view and no debate without both sides of the argument being transparant is truly acceptable.
I won't be playing it because it's too expensive and I'm not going to get on moral ground to make my decision.
All a shame really, but I don't expect Trump will lose an ounce of sleep and I have to say the photos from the other thread (setting aside the film) make it look stunning, stunning indeed...

Would be really good for the World Golfing Federation (if such a body is called that) to make an announcement on stuff like this. That the environment is more important than nice scenery to chase after a ball in. There are plenty of tracts of land that would benefit from landscaping without destorying the last remmnants of coastal havens like this.
I'm a huge fan of golf, but not at this expense. Trump should be ashamed of himself but more importantly, the people who let this happen (the Scottish government and planners) should be more ashamed and hounded out of their offices.

Agreed that this was one sided in the extreme - I'm a member of several UK golf forums where local people have stated there was plenty of local support for the project particularly due to the jobs created.....but then this wouldn't have made a good documentary.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 354 ✭✭The Guardian

If I got a few free rounds there I'm sure I could be convinced that Trump is a good honest business man.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 354 ✭✭The Guardian

    watched this last night
    thanks snowdrifts

trump just being trump as far as i could see - no surprises there
the man has little class, indeed his entire family dont

what is really disappointing is the role assumed by the the scottish govt
they completely sold out to trump

not completely clear what is the position on the environmental damage - seems to have completely overhauled a natural habitat and dunes system. which is a shame obviously. i'm not sure if any environmental grps gave the green light here. appears not. golf and the local ecosystems and co exist btw. plenty examples worldwide. suspect this compromise wasnt gonna be offered by donald tho.

local guys are portrayed as redneck simpletons when it suits the documentary maker. he could have done better than this i'm sure.
