Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I remember watching a TV programme a few weeks back on BBC who disagree with you, broadband and tv are basically essentials. After watching it, I kind of agree. They are now part of a basic standard of living.

An internet connection is definitely part of a basic standard of living. Not being somewhat tech-savvy in a few years will leave you virtually unemployable.

    TV isnt though.

Christ, some people have 700-1000 after all their outgoings a month? I only take home 400 a week to run a family of 4 on.

    Figures are per month though.

Me personally my 700 a month is 175 per week for food, clothes, petrol, heating etc for 2 people....Not really a whole lot.

    Mortgage,
    ESB
    Gas,
    tv licence (monthly installments)
    UPC (tv and internet),
    home and life insurance,
credit card bills (i made a deal with them to pay back a fixed amount every month of 100)
Petrol isnt too bad, i have a company car and the wife has a little runner that doesnt use much.

The summer was tough, new baby in the house and there were major delays in the wife getting maternity benefit so we were down about 800 a month, had to borrow from family, and we went interest only for three months to give us some breathing space.

We did a back payment, but it doesnt go as far as you'd think

over all theres never a lot left towards the end of the month, maybe 100 euro if we're lucky

I make my own lunch, we don't go out, no holiday this year, last year we went to west cork, (which was brilliant in fairness), the only splurge would be some wine and the occassional take away.

    Ireland's great isnt it? :)

After mortgage, pension, petrol, creche fees and other bills we have about €2600 left a month. We save half of that as we have a young son and can see things getting tougher in the next few years. So about €1300 left for food, entertainment and unforeseen expenses.

After reading this thread i feel damn lucky.

    You are loaded!

Ok, when I see someone write "Sky" I read it as being TV....for me its the same thing as UPC etc....its 25 euro a month also, so not expensive.

So, while not essential, its not a luxury. Its a basic standard of living.

How can you say Sky and UPC are not a luxury? A basic standard of living does not extend to having a greater choice than the national channels.

About 1400 after all expenses like mortgage, creche, direct debit and monthly groceries. That's just my surplus though as my wife works too.

Actually, having done the MABS calculator and factored in all my bills and expenses, I have a surplus of €34.25 per month. Wohoo!
That is my nest egg, right there ;)

I'd do this no matter what I earn. Much easier to control how healthy your lunch is, and can't see the sense in handing over a fiver or more every day when I have a perfectly good kitchen at home.

Occasionally, I treat myself to lunch in work.

I love Ireland, but it pains me to admit there are other countries were I could work my same job, get paid more money, pay less taxes, and afford a higher standard of living.

    It's a shame really :(

I'm not even against taxes - it just seems as though we hardly get a fair value for what we pay.
