In a gaming machine there is no question that the i5 is the way to go, an i7 would really be a waste unless you have applications that can benefit from hyperthreading, and games don't tend to be one of them.

If (as I presume from the OP) you will be gaming on a single 24" monitor there is probably little real value in spending more than €1,300-ish on the box itself. I would suggest something like my build below, I have put in a decent wattage modular PSU and a fairly expensive motherboard that will support future crossfiring if needs be (I'd usually be a bit tighter on the spend here ).

The build below comes to a little over €1600 all included, a chunk of the change left over from €2000 would be far better off spent on a good keyboard, mouse, headphones and/or speakers than upgrading parts such as the CPU to an i7 or the GPU to a HD7970/GXT680 that will be of little tangible additional benefit.

Even at the HD7950 is really overkill for the 1920 X 1200 Dell monitor I have suggested, but as you mentioned longevity it should keep going strong for a fairly long time at that resolution.

With your budget you might want to consider joining the 27" IPS Catleap club, in that case you would could consider a more powerfully GPU.
