It's really not a hurricane anymore, and we will see that in the next NHC discussion I would reckon. We're now talking about the interaction of tropical moisture and polar air, with the help of an upper trough.

EDIT: The Weather Channel have just said pretty much the same thing now.

    Yes really changed structure now.

    It's forming a extra-tropical cyclone type tail.

NHC will likely still keep it as a 'Hurricane' for safety reasons.

Nick Wiltgen, weather.com Meteorologist: Winds are now sustained at 75 mph - hurricane force - at skyscraper level (1,000 feet above ground) in the New York City area, as measured by Doppler radar.

That was from 30 minutes ago.

It ain't going to last much longer.

Doesn't look like it. This was as close as I could get before the police pushed us back.

On the news, CNN I think, it says that city officials went down to take a look but there was no plans to take it down.

    Mind yourself!

    No they won't.
Because Sandy is expected to make this transition before reaching the coast, the NWS has
been using non-tropical wind watches and warnings, issued by local NWS Weather Forecast
Offices (WFOs), to communicate the wind threat posed by Sandy in the Mid-Atlantic States and
New England. (This is why NHC’s tropical storm warnings extend only into North Carolina.)
The NWS plans to continue using non-tropical watches and warnings issued by local offices in
the Mid-Atlantic States and northward throughout this event. By using non-tropical warnings in
these areas from the start, we avoid or minimize the significant confusion that could occur if the
warning suite changed from tropical to non-tropical in the middle of the event.
When NHC determines that Sandy has become post-tropical, NHC advisory products will cease.

So it doesn't look like it"s going to get a whole lot worse in Manhattan regarding wind and rain though plenty flooding downtown. Spotted a couple of trees down earlier though.

Governor of NJ is on complaining that the mayor of Atlantic City didn't evacuate people and instead told people to move to shelters within the city. The Governor qsaid that Emergency Services will not respond to any 911 calls from Atlantic City due to risk to the 'first-responders'. He's pissed that people didn't leave when warned :)

oooh, I hear things snapping out there! stuff is breaking and car alarms are going off! eek! :D coooool!!

I see that landfall is expected within the half hour, does this mean it will get worse? how long can I expect this to last before normality resumes?

So Chris Christie, Republican, who is probably favourite to become President in 2016, criticises a Democrat Mayor? Looks like he is already starting his campaign.
