Sorry for asking this question here: I got my rentsupplement approved but no mention of the duration of payment. Do I need to reapply after a specified period or what is the procedure?

It's reviewed twice a year, usually September and March.

Thanks for the info. After being reviewed and one still meets the qualifying conditions, does that mean the payment will continue pending changes in circumstances? I thought I saw something like `short term assistance' on the website.

It's "short-term" until you get a local authority property

Rent Supplement is payable for as long as you meet the qualifying criteria. Any change in circumstances is to be reported to your CWO and your needs may be re-assessed if necessary. You should not need to re-apply but your CWO may periodically contact you asking you to confirm that your circumstances haven't changed. Especially if the maximum rent level has been altered. They will wish to confirm that you and your landlord are still complying with the new level.

If you were to get a full time job your entitlement to Rent Supplement would cease. If you were to get a part-time job, with 15 hours a week, your entitlement would not necessarily cease but your income will need to be assesed. If your income is below a certain level you will continue to recieve the supplement but you may recieve less than the full amount.

Rent Supplement is offically a short-term solution. As snubbleste said, you recieve the supplement until you are housed. This, of course, is dependant on you continuing to meet the qualifying criteria. The average time a single, childless person will be waiting to be housed is 7 - 8 years, in Dublin anyway, so generally the hope is that a person will find full-time employment before then. That is why it's considered "short-term".

Rent Supplement varies wildly from person to person. Some people get paid weekly, some mothly; some people get paid through the Post Office, others get sent a cheque. In some cases the supplement goes directly to the landlord. So it can hard to advise an individual on what to expect.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. It is now very clear to me.
