    what can i get/do to stop a dog barking in the middle of the night

    will a whistle frightn him off (he is a stray)

    A whistle might only encourage him to bark more as dogs will usually bark at any new strange sounds. If he is a stray you should report him to your local dog warden.

    Not a lot. Dogs bark.

    If you don't want to go the warden route, you could take him in, feed him, stick a collar on him, get him checked over at the vet, take him for regular walks.....

    If neither idea appeals, earplugs?
