Extending maternity leave - how to do it

Hi there
I am currently on my 6 months of maternity leave. I am keen to extend my leave, and take the additional 16 weeks of unpaid leav that we are entitled to. At the moment I am due to return to work in January.
Does anyone know how I formally go about this? I am pretty sure my employer is going to be unimpressed so want to have everything ready before I let them know...

You'll have to give them good notice so I would start letting them know now, I think you could just ring your HR department and discuss it with them. Don't worry about them being unimpressed it's your right to take the leave. Enjoy your little bundle!

You have to give 4 weeks notice counting back from the end of your statutory maternity leave date to your employer of your intention to return to work so you'd normally apply for this at the same time and then agree your new return date.
