Thank you for all the advice everyone! Was up during the week for induction, got to explore a little bit, have a better idea of where things are now, thankfully. Currently looking at house shares, but slightly difficult to know where the 202 bus stops are!
Will look and see if there is anything on Cathedral Road now, the hills around there are fine, but when I was nipping through an alley from the quays to the Butter Museum, I can tell there would be trouble during winter! :P

    Yeah,,the hills are great...

We're on the other side of the City,,but if/when it snows,or gets icy,,the hills aren't that much fun anymore.

I've often wondered why the north side of Cork isn't the posh bit with the fantastic views a lot of it has.

There would be no where on the Southside that could compare to Sunday's Well or Montenotte. Proper houses and proper wealth.

    Yeah but they're exceptions really.

Blackrock and Rochestown would be comparable to SW & Montenotte.

The north side bashing is ridiculous. I'd have no problem whatsoever living in the north side if it suited me. I've found that minding your own business keeps you out of trouble and being a dick gets you into it and I'm sure that applies equally on both sides of the river.

I am from the suburbs so it is just a type of sport to ball hop someone because they are from either North or South, I bash both sides in equal amounts :D There all city fiends to me :)

There are parts of both areas that have problems and parts of both that are good. As pointed out the hills can be a killer in icy weather. Also if the river floods and you are commuting anywhere that involves crossing the river then be prepared for heartbreak and traffic.

Don't take a ground floor flat if its on-street. Trust me on that...

Viewing a house in Sunday's Well on Monday, looks great and fits my budget perfectly so fingers crossed!

I've heard horror stories from ground floor flats, want to be in a house with other people really, generally feels more secure and it's nice to have somebody to talk to! Much prefer houses to flats anyway, not sure why, I just do! :pac:

The poorer area in a lot of cities is historically linked to wind direction - pollution from factory smoke in the industrial era.

That's not the reason here in Cork though. Sunday's Well Montenotte (and previously St Lukes/Military Hill) are all well to do areas and are on the Northside with nice views.

The further you go on the Northside is historically where there were Irish communities living outside the English city of Corke..

Much of the Northside was in the slum clearance programs of the 20's 30's and just replaced with better local authority housing stock..Old maps of Cork show these areas.

Never understood the vibe with Rochestown TBH. I think it's soulless. Full of identikit yellow houses with little character. Area's been overdeveloped to ****. Blackrock's MUCH nicer! I'm not over-fond of Douglas either.

Another nice area spoiled by over-development is Glanmire.

Never understood the Northside bashing. Most of it done by people that don't know it and their snobbery prevents them from learning anything about it or the Norries. From the Southside, but worked plenty and socialised more north of the Lee. Never experienced anything different to the Southside. Another thing, I never had to go back to the Northside to be paid for work done there.

OP - are you working in Apple? Depends on where in Shanakiel you'll be renting! If it's Laurel Ridge or any where near, AVOID!!! Not a nice area...

That's not very nice, I've lived in Laurel Ridge for 11 years and I've yet to mug anyone...:(

If you want to stick north, then have look at Gurranabraher

I might stick to Laurel Ridge I think

Who said anything about muggers? I don't like the area - That's it! :) I don't like Gurran either, but recommended it as it's close to Apple and easy to get to...

    There's a big difference between
If it's Laurel Ridge or any where near, AVOID!!! Not a nice area...

    And
    I don't like the area - That's it! :)

And as a resident of this quiet and pleasant estate I don't want people to think that there is anything wrong with the place. We actually take a lot of pride in the estate, if you come up on a Saturday morning you will see residents out cleaning the roads and our green areas are cut regularly.

Plus there are few views in the city that will beat this

I don't know, that crow on the lamppost looks proper shifty, and that tree isn't straight either! :pac:

Lads, this thread has run its course a long time ago, (10 days?) any new posts are tit for tat

    I'm very happy for you...

Now can we get back on topic please? I hope the OP's found somewhere nice to live and has settled down to life in Cork.

Thanks, I moved into a house share in Sunday's Well. Haven't really explored the city, have been busy with starting at work and getting the stuff I need from home :)
