I beg to differ. I actually think Mike Brown will land himself another gig. He's like the Barack Obama of Coaches.

For some reason, I fancy him joining the NY Teams. Yeah, they're stupid like that. :D

Your attempt at humor only highlights your ignorance.

ESPN reporting that Phil Jackson is " open to returning to the NBA , " Espn also saying that Jackson is on the 4-5 man replacement list for Mike Brown. The stage is set for the return of the best coach in the NBA, I think with the way he left it after the 2010-2011 season being swept in the first round would have rankled with Jackson. He would be returning to a star studded team, and would have no problems dealing with Kobe. Lakers have said they will look for an assistant coach, but if Jackson wants the job, then they will chose him for sure. Exciting times in the basketball world! http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8612254/phil-jackson-open-nba-coaching-return-sources-say

Was it not in Jackson's autobiography where he said he didn't want to coach Kobe when he stopped being Kobe? Now I know he can still play...but I'd imagine that'd still be an issue for Jackson. He's on borrowed time now, we're talking 1-2 seasons left at the top, max.

It wouldn't shock me to see him come back, but not to the Lakers. Brooklyn, Denver, Memphis or the likes maybe, i.e. a mid-level team with good prospects for the right coach. Miami, definitely, so he can say he's coached Jordan, Kobe, Shaq AND LeBron...but I think Spoelstra is safe enough in his job now that he's won a Championship. But, yeah, not the Lakers. He's nothing left to prove there.

Roland Lazenby always has an interesting take on Lakers stuff, well worth a follow right now: @lazenby

I read Phil Jackson put it to the Lakers before, that he only coach home games (and an assistant-coach take charge for the road games) because of his health issues and travelling, but the Lakers wouldn't go for it. Wonder if that would be part of the negotiation this time.

Both Kobe and Howard have both now come out and said that they want Phil to be the new Lakers coach, when the two star players are saying it, the fans are chanting it and the board are saying he is on the list of possible replacements, I think this is going to happen . Ofcourse unless Jackson himself doesnt wish to come back, quote Kobe

"You guys know how I feel about Phil," Bryant said. "The one thing that's kind of always bothered me is that his last year (in 2011) I wasn't able to give him my normal self, you know what I mean? Because I was playing on one leg. That's always eaten away at me. The last year of his career I wasn't able to give him everything I had."

"He's too great of a coach to go out that way," Bryant said. "That's my personal sentiment. For me, it was just … I took it to heart because I couldn't give it everything that I had, because my knee was shot. That's always kind of bothered me."

D'Antoni is the other main candidate, he obviously had great success with Nash at the Suns, but the Zen Master is a much stronger candidate imo

Edit : Another interesting possibility is Jerry Sloan, out of a job since that feud with in February D Wil in 11

Just managed to watch the replay of the Celtics-Sixers game, and I think Boston is struggling just like the Lakers, if not more so. I mean they just got beaten by a Sixers team playing without Bynum. Who is probably the closest thing they have to a Star.

This thing was unimaginable a few years back. Though I'd like to say that the Celtics are getting old, but then the Ancient Ageless Spurs shot that theory down the hole, as they are still tearing it up out West. Just reinforces my belief that Greg Popovich is still the Best NBA Coach.

On another note, I'm gutted today as we lost to the Knicks. Can't complain though, as 2 of the brightest Mavs (Collison,Mayo) this season were the main culprits for our loss. Hopefully we can still manage to tough-it-out and win some games, even with our injuries.

As for the ongoing Lakers-Coach Saga, I know that Jackson and D'Antoni are obviously the favorites to get the job, but what do you guys think about Larry Brown? Larry Brown was once one of hottest coaches in the NBA after winning the title with the unfancied Pistons in 2004. I still can't believe he doesn't have a coaching job in the NBA since 2010. If both Jackson and D'Antoni doesn't work out, I think Brown might be worth a shout.

Multiple sources saying that after Jacksons meeting with the board today the job is "his to turn down ." Sources say Phil Jackson will bring along Jim Cleamons and Kurt Rambis to join him in LA. The L.A times have said its " it a 95% chance he will return for a third tour with the team. " Its happening

In other news, Kevin McHale has taken an indefinite leave of absence from coaching the Rockets due to " personal reasons. "

Gonna be honest and say that I think they should let D'antoni take over. Big Phil has reached a stage where he doesn't go to a lot of away games, which is not what a struggling team needs. That 7 seconds or less offense would be fantastic to watch. It might kill Kobe though :P

Are you saying, if he's in charge of the Lakers, he won't travel to some road games?!

This is the latest concerning Jackson and the Lakers. http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/8616281/sources-phil-jackson-meets-los-angeles-lakers-brass

If what it says there are indeed true, then Jackson is indeed pushing for limited appearances in Away Games.

Well at least I'll get to see them on the top 10 plays of the day regularly.

    This is a bizzare decision.
Kobe is going to hate this offence at this stage of his career.

Is this a statement that it's Dwights team now?

Don't think it's that bizarre. Phil Jackson unwilling/unable to travel to away games pretty much killed that option. D'Antoni coached Nash and Amare (you'd imagine he'll try something similar with Nash & Dwight), he has coached Kobe in the past as an assistant on the USA Team and you'd assume has Kobe's blessing.

It's not Dwight's team until Kobe retires. And if you read ESPN.com or watch PTI you'll know the Lakers are already moving the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle around to make a run at Lebron when his Miami contract expires in case he wants to take his talents to Hollywood.

Yeah I know Phil was a non starter with all of his demands but I just can't see D'Antoni winning a championship.
Also Pau and Artest are going to get pissed off just standing out on the 3 point line while Nash and Dwight run the pick and roll or Kobe goes iso.
For this to work we need to trade for a couple of consistant jump shooters to come off the bench.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,901 ✭✭✭Raif Severance

Hmm... interesting hire. I've always been a fan of D'Antoni. It was such a joy to watch his team play, win or lose. Kinda like my Mavs, under Don Nelson.

I'm hoping he and Nash wins at least 1 Championship, even if its with the Lakers. I think they both deserve one, honestly.

Like Felexicon above says, there are some concerns concerning the current pieces within the Lakers and how they'll be able to fit within D'Antoni's structure.

Because if Pick-and-roll is going to be the Lakers' Centerpiece Offense aside from Kobe's Isos, then both players need to be able to hit consistent Jump Shots for it to be effective. This is demonstrated to good use by Stockton-to-Malone, Nash/JT to Nowitzki, and Nash and Amare.

Now the question is, can Howard and Gasol hit consistent jump shots? I know Pau has some ability, but he'd be one of the last persons on the floor for the Lakers, I'd ask to hit one from the outside. As for Howard, I've been trying to rack my head and I still don't know whether Howard has even attempted one.

No, they need a couple of spot up shooters no question, and some pace in the 2 guard and small forward positions. It's a threadbare bench. Expect some trade activity around All Star Weekend.......with Pau Gasol the carrot once again - they really have no other bait to offer.

Amnesty Ron Artest and go fishing in the free agent pool in the summer is another option.
If they put Pau on the block and get no takers again it'll look really bad for him.
Also if this is a long term project we need to look at boosting our PG options because Nash can't have too long left and Steve Blake cannot be an NBA first choice on any team never mind one that wants to win Championships.

It's strange this appointment has me going from ecstatic to depressed and back again all morning.

    SHOWTIME IS BACK PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't get the apathy for Gasol at all. He's a serious player with an incredible skill set for a big man. Yes, he's never going to be a beast in the post but the guy could do so much for the right team. So much. He was awesome in the Olympics against the US and has some serious career numbers behind him (in a team with Kobe Ballhog Bryant). In many ways he reminds me of 80s style Celtics basketball - outstanding fundamentals and an eye for team ball. I'm not at all surprised Houston/Kevin McHale wanted him last year. Someone will get a bargain if they land him in a trade, pretty much regardless of what they give up.

I'd imagine the Bulls would be interested if they can get rid of Boozer.....

    Agreed

I rate Pau very highly. I think he, more than most recent imports, has been unfairly stuck with the "soft" European tag.
It's probably because he's never been found snorting coke off a hookers nipple while one of DMXs dogs licks his arsehole in a Walmart childrens toy aisle

    My feelings, exactly.

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke-lakers-dantoni-20121112,0,2305319.column

What I'm really worried about is the lakers defense, it was awful with Brown, a "defensive specialist" and D'antoni is not known for defense, at all :(

Not Jackson, but he'll have to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,344 ✭✭✭buyer95

Still shocked at this, I knew Phil's demands were hefty but I thought they would work it out... It seems I wasn't the only one, this is a good read, published by David Aldridge today about the move. http://www.nba.com/2012/news/features/david_aldridge/11/12/morning-tip-lakers-choose-mike-dantoni-over-phil-jackson/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpt3a

One things for sure, the Lakers are going to be amazing to watch

Interesting tidbit about Kobe " It was hardly a secret around the league that Bryant had run over Brown, that he considered himself as much the coach as Brown had been. He didn't throw Brown under the bus publicly, saying all the right things, no daylight between the two of them. Just last week, he'd told anxious fans to "shut up" and let the team get used to the Princeton. But in all the ways that really matter on a team, Bryant was running things.

kobe and an older steve nash could end up broken in this offense they could get away with it if they had a decent bench but they dont kobe in particular has pretty much no knees at this stage it could work out fantastic but i think it will end up a disaster

im not worried about there d i think once howard gets back up to speed hel take care of that
