am i right in thinking g or n makes no difference wireless browsing on an 8mbit line?

will the g router slow down streaming and file transfer on n devices?

Yes and yes. HD streaming is not really an option, in the real world, an 802.11g wireless connection maxes out around 30mbps unless you're sitting right next to the router.

i have the basic eircom router with 1 antenna
wireless range is the biggest problem

is it possible to replace it with a g router with a much better range
or do i need a router and AP?

You can buy a Wireless G router and connect it to the Eircom router. Then disable WLAN in the Eircom router.
