Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Has to be retired players yes? Cesc is still going...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,076 ✭✭✭Eathrin

3 of the 4 midfielders I had considered picking were picked before me, Fabregas offers something different so the team style changes accordingly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,076 ✭✭✭Eathrin

Oh I was under the impression it was a player no longer playing in the EPL.
    My Bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,990 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The wildcard round will be played in round 8 and will be any former Premier League player that is currently retired. The player will be judged on his peak form in the Premier League.

Says currently retired so its pretty clear.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,763 ✭✭✭Jax Teller

If we take his peak year to be 1994-1995, I don't think it can be beaten by any striker.

He had an extra 4 games that lot of the other strikers didn't have .

    Corrected.
Pleased with my selection though I had planned on grabbing a midfielder.
    Apologies for the misunderstanding.

Has your man gone offline without changing his pick?

    edit: never mind

No I think he changed it.

    Henry isn't retired either .

Christ, are people actually incapable of reading simple rules?

If at least two people thought that it was just former PL players and not retired ones, I'm pretty amazed they didn't try to pick Ronaldo.

I have no idea how he got this far without being picked but anyway my next pick is probably the greatest foreign player to play in the premiership

I have an idea...as pointed out above, still playing.

Is it Ok to pick Robbie Fowler ? He hasn't been with a club in over a year ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,623 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

I think we can let Robbie Fowler slide. He is as good as anyway

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,832 ✭✭✭✭Blatter

Sorry about this but rules are rules. Fowler isn't retired yet, have to go again.

  • Registered Users Posts: 958 ✭✭✭eugeneious

In fairness there are a few strikers I would class above Robbie Fowler available anyway.

There a few players who were retired but are now playing for a team , Wembley Fc in the Fa Cup at the moment . Are they allowed ? Don't think they should myself

  • Registered Users Posts: 406 ✭✭Yurt

Thats who i thought Tony Adams played for but i checked and it's Martin Keown ? Are they getting paid ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,076 ✭✭✭Eathrin

Nope, always best to keep to the original rules pretty strictly imo, if any exceptions were allowed they'd have to be mentioned and agreed upon before the round began. Have to be currently retired.

And before anyone tries to pick Robert Pires, he isn't retired yet as far as I can see.

Just had to say that Faurlin is a great little pick. As bad as QPR have been, he's always managed to impress when they've been on the tele.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,952 ✭✭✭Morzadec

    Outsider's opinion:

Blatter's team shaping up very solidly all round and he'd be the early favourite at this stage imo.

There's 3 or 4 teams that are already out of the running imo.

Pretty close all round with lots of decent looking teams that could improve over the last few rounds. I like the look of Liam 's team as well but the legends round will obviously disadvantage him a little bit as he will have the last pick.

I wish Andy Carroll was still in the draft, purely to see what "legend" he'd pick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,365 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Stam and Huth is a hell of a "take-no shít" CB partnership.

    it'd have to be IMO...

what a frontline that'd be. Dunc and Andy. ouch.

Came very close to picking Stam but God he is not.

Even if my last Defensive or GK slot isnt top quality now

    .Luiz...McGrath..Azpilicueta

should give me a strong defense that only the very best frontlines would be expected to break down, meanwhile Ruiz, Dzenko and white hot Suarez will hopefully give the opposition a whole lot of trouble at the other end.

I honestly dont think it would be too bad to have a late pick in this round, there really is some quality available some of which i expect will slip through the cracks altogether. Having said that T.Adams & Stam are obviously great defensive picks as are people like Keane/Viera in midfield and Shearer and Zola in attack.

honestly didnt even realise RVN had retired, for some reason I assumed he was still banging in the goals in Germany or back in holland just not making much headlines.

let me be clear, i don't rate Huth that highly.

he and Stam would just take no shít.

Stam was awesome. Huth, not so much. a great threat from set-pieces though.

stopper = keeper in football language from what I know.

I think Robert Huth is the most underrated centre half in the Premier League. He is an excellent defender, great with the ball at his feet too(he has played full back when Stoke have needed him to) and a huge threat from set pieces in the opposing box.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stopper

    stopper may refer to:
    • Stopper (knot), a type of a knot at the end of the rope
    • Stopper (plug), also known as a cork, a plug or a bung used to temporarily seal a bottle opening
    • Drain stopper, used to stop a drain in a sink, bathtub, etc., often with holes or slits so that water can pass through but large solids are stopped
    • Stopper (football magazine)
    • a center back in soccer. See Defender (association football)

Interesting that, in my 30+ years playing and watching soccer I've never heard it used but have heard the term used for a goalkeeper.

    seriously?

though ive never heard it used as a keeper. Strange

anyway, I suppose I was a bit harsh on Huth, he is a solid CB. Between him and stam they'd murder most teams in the air anyway

Are we going on with it or will I wait for Trippie?

Klinsmann is a great pick btw Delboy.

I just assume we go on. It was already said that Pires wasn't retired and the rules in the OP were pretty clear. It's his own fault as far as I'm concerned - I'd work away.

    And thanks :)

I was considering Klinsmann if RVN had gone.

To get him at pick 19 is quite the coup as far as I'm concerned.

It's not Delboys fault Trippie can't go by the rules .

Does he post on here apart from drafts ?

Pires hasn't kicked a ball in over a year in professional football. He's also 39 years old.

It's harsh in the extreme to make Trippie pick again imo. Let him have it.

The same could be said of fowler but one poster was made change from him so its not fair at this stage to let pires slide

In fairness Pires was specifically stated by Blatter as an example of one you couldn't pick. Harsh but it has to be consistent.

Yeah might seem harsh, but the rules are there for a reason and were pointed out beforehand.

I'm surprised Trippie didnt see Blatter's post tbh. I'm keeping up on both threads and amn't in the thing.

Anyway there's plenty of decent players left for him to pick from

Suprising that he's not retired though, who does Pires think is going to sign him at 39?

  • Registered Users Posts: 958 ✭✭✭eugeneious

De Guzman and Britton are very good picks picks at this stage. Anyone surprised at some of the legends picked/not picked?

Edit: Forgot not to name any until Trippie has picked again!

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,231 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

Be unfair to include Pires as other players who may have wanted him, decided not to as he isn't eligible.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
