Raspberry Pi -> Internet via eMobile dongle

    I'm in a rented house temporarily. No landline.

    I've got my XP PC attaching to the Internet using an eMobile dongle.
    Works fine :) . Note: NOT a WiFi dongle. No WiFi access here.

    I'm also using an eircom modem/router -just as a dhcp client, so that I can access my NAS.

    Now how do I get my Raspberry Pi to access the Internet off the network ?
    I attached it, by cable, to my home network modem/router, hoping it might share the internet access
    provided by the eMobile dongle. No good :(

    It looks like the eMobile dongle restricts access the the single PC to which it is attached.

    I'd like to get the Raspbery Pi on the net .....

    Is there any way to do this ?

    I'd rather say your PC is not configured to share the internet access with router (and RPI). Have you tried to connect RPI using ethernet cable directly to your PC?

    You could set up a proxy on the box that the dongle is connected to then point the Pi at that.

    Thanks for suggestions :)

    @ PrzemoF :
    Have you tried to connect RPI using ethernet cable directly to your PC?
    Not tried that. Only one Net connector on the PC and it is connected to the router. Maybe I could dis that temporarily.

    I'm not sure what you mean by 'configured to share the internet access with router'
    I can do eMobile -> Properties -> Advanced and have clicked 'Allow other network users to connect through this computers connection' . Is that the correct way ?

    @Khannie

    Now that - I do NOT know how to do :(

    Tools ->Options ->Network Settings .... now where...:confused::confused:

    Yes, I think that's it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126

    I'm a linux user ,except at work :-(, so I'm not claiming to be 100% correct.

    Have you tried to ping you laptop from RPI? Tell me if you need the details how to do it.

    BTW you might try to test a linux livecd, just to test if the dongle really restricts number of users.

    Could you change your router for one that has a USB socket and plug the Emobile dongle into that?
    That will allow access from all devices attached to it.
    You can actually make one of those from the Raspberry Pi itself using ipfire , but that kind of defeats the purpose!

    Have you tried to ping you laptop from RPI?

    Yes - I've pinged from RPi and it hangs on the command which I take to mean it is getting no response.

    -> ping 109.125.39.66

    It repeats the command and stops.

    When using ping I thought it would report 100% loss of packages, if no contact could be made to the IP ref.

    ipconfig on XP gives the following - whether RPi is connected or not:
    Windows IP Configuration

    Don't have a LIveCD here - all back at my own house - packed away. CAnnot download such a large file while using eMobile -takes too much of my credit of 7.5Gig allowance.

    I had assumed the eMobile dongle was WINdows only. Would it function in Ubuntu ?

    I could do that - I have a spare vodafone modem/router also.

    The Rpi does have a WiFi dongle driver
    But does it have an eMobile dongle driver ?

    It is linux after all and surely Eircom would provide for linux users ?

    Hmmm....

    Should work. I don't have any dongle to test it, but I some some people reporting that it works.

    Try to ping laptop from RPI (or the other way) using local address like 192.168.1.8 - you need connection on local network.

    Ping just not doing it :(

    Found what might be the solution.
