Anti-Theft Alarms in Shops

I know its AH, but maybe someone will have an answer!!
Anyway, you know those alarms they have at the entrances to shops and supermarkets that beep if you walk through with a security tagged item....does anybody know of anything else that might set them off?

For the last 10 days (6 times or so), every time I walk into or out of my local Tesco it beeps at me. I have no idea why! I've tried wearing different shoes etc but it makes no difference! I've stood back and watched other people walk through no problem, but once I go it starts beeping!

    Any ideas??

Try removing the Tesco value condom from the hidden sleeve in your wallet.

You've got a security tag on your clothes somewhere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,655 ✭✭✭El Inho

I know that a mobile phone placed over a security sticker will make it useless while the sticker is covered by the phone...

Learned this while working in a sports shop, and wowed the lovely ladies of the UL Library with it recently working on their books that wouldn't let me register a loan.

Serious answer? I think some alloys set them off. Maybe a metal badge, label, buttons. Who Knows.

Are you carrying a man bag?

Would you have any manly moisturiser, or man cosmetics in your man bag?

I ask because cosmetics/sunscreen tubes often have this tiny security tags on them and they cam set off alarms.

actually you hardly carry a hand bag or push a pram do you?

same job as mentioned above, these two items often posed problems

A housemate of mine had a theft tag clipped into the inside of his jacket. He set off the alarm so much the staff at asda got to know him. They came to the conclusion that it was his phone. I know better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,147 ✭✭✭PizzamanIRL

Use this to your advantage and start stealing from there.

They'll just think 'Ah it's that freak again who always sets off the alarm' and they'll let you go.

Spend a day gathering every single item you own (clothes, electronics, books, etc) into an array of suitcases, then bring the suitcases through the scanners. Now place one item into an empty suitcase (forgot to mention you will also need an equal amount of empty suitcases) then go through again. Continue with this lengthy and time-consuming process of elimination until you have narrowed down your search. Then spend a few moments looking back on what you have accomplished and reflecting on your life in general.

Simply remove all your clothes before entering the store and stroll around the shop as nature intended, you'll probably find that you won't have to wait in line at the check-out for too long.
    Hope this helps.
    Good luck.

I don't think that's very helpful advice to be perfectly honest with you.

... well according to the manual anyways.

Are your jeans from Gap by any chance? My dad bought a few pairs in the states and walked around setting shop alarms off until an assistant in one copped on that he was wearing gap jeans and told him that they sew in a tag that doesn't even look like a tag but often it doesn't get removed.

    https://www.google.com/search?q=gap+jeans+security+tag&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
