Thanks and sorry to disappoint you!

You know I only jest. As some quarehawk once said "the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing". Amid the disappointment and concern over The Beast, the main thing is that you can enjoy your running and be pain-free. If that takes a little while to come right, it'll be worth the wait.

Persistent injuries are tough to deal with. Especially as it is often hard to get medical folks to deal with anything other than the immediate symptoms, and friends feel free to chip with "helpful" comments. I have lost count of the number of times I have said "ok, that's it"... but I still keep coming back. Look at the long term rather than the immediate race. After three years I am finally injury free (touch wood). Slow, a bit frustrated... but injury free. Keep the faith.

The truth is I would never defect to the TDAR forum.

I just wouldn't fit in over there. My bike isn't expensive enough and I don't have enough lycra in my wardrobe

Thanks. Your dead right. As I've been reminded lately it's important to remember the bigger picture and no matter how bad it gets there's always people worse off.

There I was, catching up, and you nearly give me a heart attack. Never do that again! ;) Someone put tape over her close account button, will ya??

Anyway... trust me when I say I know how frustrating injury can be. Especially for you with being under team pressure to perform. But shotgun will get over it if you can't race. Im like him tho, I trust in providence that you will.

Haha sorry! Seeing the specialist on Thursday so fingers crossed.

I know there's lots of people on boards who have had to deal with far worse than me and are back training and racing. Makes me feel bad for making such a fuss

Fussing is allowed. No one is dealing with this but you. It sucks and you're allowed to be cross. :)

On Monday I think I went a bit mad with the stretching/strength exercises because I had REALLY bad DOMS in my right quads on Tuesday. I was determined that more exercises/ice and a hot water bottle was definitely the way to cure it so that's what I did and I had trouble sleeping Tuesday evening it was so uncomfortable. Wednesday it was as bad so I said I'd do some stretches and nothing else and it improved a bit. I had to see the specialist today so I didn't want to have two gammy legs and thankfully it was nearly better this morning. I looked up his details before I went. He was a Welsh junior international at cross country running, fell running, triathlon and duathlon and he represented Great Britain at triathlon in 06 and 07. Unfortunately he was unable to tell me anything that I didn't already know. Nothing obvious wrong with me and I need an MRI. Stupid me thought that I'd be able to get the MRI immediately but no I have to wait for the first free date which is the 23rd. Bit of a bummer! I was told I was good to cycle though and aqua jogging was also recommended.

When I got home I had an exciting email regarding the Beast of Ballyhoura (I haven't given up on it yet) I think it's a good course for me this year if I can make the startline because there is much less on foot than previous year's and way more kayaking/biking

2014 Beast Route Minimum Distances For Each Section.

    Start Short Foot Orienteering 1km

    Section 1.1 Kayak 20km
    Section 1.2 Swim 600m
    Section 1.3 Foot Orienteering 11km
    Section 1.4 Kayak 13km

    TA1 Kit/Bike Boxes

    Section 2.1 Mountain Bike 50km
Section 2.2 Water Based Task 3.5km
    Section 2.3 Mountain Bike 38km
Section 2.4 Foot Based Task 1km-5km
    Section 2.5 Mountain Bike 28km

    TA2 Kit Boxes

    Section 3.1 Kayak 20km
    Section 3.2 Foot Orienteering 25km

    TA3 Kit Boxes

    Section 4.1 Mountain Bike 27km
    Section 4.2 Foot Orienteering 5km
    Section 4.3 Mountain Bike 20km

    Finish

So with renewed optimism I decided to head to the pool for some aqua jogging. Had a little google first to see if there was anyway I could possibly injure myself anymore but it seems a pretty safe form of exercise. It was suggested that while I was there I may even do some swimming! My swimming form has been likened to that of a three legged dog but never the less I decided to swim one length, jog for 2 to 3 minutes and repeat. Ended up staying in the pool for an hour and swimming 28 lengths (700m). Happy out now with my exercise endorphins.

    Friday am:

    Bike: 18k

Had to drop my van into the garage to get it tested and I cycled home. Pretty uneventful until I arrived home. I was messing around with my watch and I forgot when I pulled the brakes sharply that I had the power straps on so when I stopped I couldn't get my feet out of the pedals and the bike and I toppled over as one. I'm sure it would have been pretty funny to watch. Like something you'd see on 'You've been framed'. I fell on my bad leg but luckily my arm took the brunt of my weight and I just grazed my elbow

    Swim lesson pm:

Things I have to practice when I'm doing front crawl
    -slow down
-breath out fully when I'm underwater
-turn head more to the side to breathe in
    -breathe every 4 strides
-make an arc shape when I'm bringing my arm forwards
    -relax my arms
-keep my hand straight and my thumb to the side
-focus on the bottom of the pool when I'm swimming
-kick my legs more consistently and in a straight line
-use my whole leg when I'm kicking not just from the knee down

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,386 ✭✭✭career move

    A.M:
18k cycle to collect my van. No unpleasant incidents to report

    P.M:
Pool. One hour aqua jogging with the belt on this time. There was another man in the pool aqua jogging and I was chatting to him and getting some tips. The time flew by while we were yapping. He had recently run the Dundrum 10k in 36 minutes and he does a good bit of aqua jogging as strength training so I was in good company.

Followed this up with 30 minutes practising my swimming technique. I felt a bit more comfortable in the water today.

    Sunday:

Rest. In keeping with my new motto 'sometimes less is more' I refrained from doing any exercise other than riding 3 horses

    Monday:

A.M: 2 hours and 43k on the bike via templetouhy, templemore, rathdowney, errill. Nothing exciting to report other than my back wheel was a bit low on pressure before I started and I pumped a bit of air into it but when I was taking off the pump I did it the wrong way and left all the air out. D'oh. That meant I was short of time when I finished because I had to be in work at 10 so I didn't get time to do any stretches.

My left glutes and quads were a bit uncomfortable for the morning.....

To paraphrase Tolkien "the fate of my Beast hangs upon a thread, and it is, I fear, the very merest thread"

P.M: 90 minutes in the pool. Started off doing lengths. Mostly front crawl to practise what I was told in the lesson but a few back stroke cause they're my favourite. There was a little fish in the lane beside me with her dad bombing up and down. Made me feel like a tractor having a race with a ferrari so I went and got an aqua belt and did 60 min jogging. Finished off with 10 lengths swimming.

Ya would definitely recommend it. I did everything in the 90 min. Well it might have been a bit longer including breaks. I'd say roughly 20 min to do the jay johnson stuff though

I was taking it easy. That's what caused the mental breakdown. Ha ha. The doc gave me the all clear to do whatever I wanted as long as it didn't aggravate my hip so now I'm in full Beast training mode. If I get through this week and I can still walk I'm sorted. Ha ha ha

60 min in the pool after work in the bacon factory. It sucks the life out of you does the bacon factory so I'm giving myself extra credit for the fact that I even made it to the pool. Just did lengths this evening. Most of the time front crawl one way and back stroke on the return. Lost count of lengths but I think I did over 500m

Mental note: stop reading CM's log last thing at night.

Last night, after reading about your cycle, I dreamt I was touring around the roads of south Laois (I used to "hang around" that part of the world, not with CM I hasten to add for the sake of her reputation). As it happens I ended up visiting the other Career Move and found out she was a pantomime horse.

    A.M

    1m easy @ 9:22

That's right folks. I ran a whole mile this morning!!!!! Well almost. I had to stop after 3 minutes to answer my phone. It was a lovely morning and my legs felt good so I said I'd risk it with the proviso that if I felt any muscle ache or nerve twinge or anything that felt wrong I would stop immediately. Felt really comfortable for the whole 9 minutes I was running and no aches or pains all day long either. BIG SMILEY FACE!

    P.M

28km cycle to the gym. I wanted to use the rowing machine a.k.a HMS Torture but there was only one working and there was a woman on that and she looked like she was settled in for the evening so I went to the pool and did an hour swimming (about 500m) and aqua jogging. Then cycled the short way home = 19k

    A.M

    Run: 2m @ 9:21

    Sweet

    P.M

Frigging back tyre was punctured so had to fix that. Took me a while cause I couldn't find the pucture and I had to get a bucket of water. Cycled 22k to the pool and then spent 40 minutes in the pool. Did 500m but couldn't be bothered with the aqua jogging because it's pretty boring. The first length was pathetic. I couldn't co-ordinate my arms and legs at all. My swimming is improving though. Slowly. I can now do 2 full lengths without collapsing or drowning although I still have an annoying habit of swallowing big mouthfuls of water. Then I cycled 28k home. Had a bit of an incident about 6 miles from home when this guy in the passenger seat of a navy car shouted something out the window at me as it was passing. I didn't really catch what he said but I stuck my finger up at the car anyway. It's an instinctive reaction when this happens or when people beep their horn at me when I'm running. The next thing the car swerves in and stops in the road in front of me. That's was a bit freaky so I just put my head down and booted it past. Kept a good pace up all the way home too!

Jeez that's frightening stuff CM. My wife cycles a lot along rural roads and has had an incident like that recently but its mainly guys shouting stuff out windows. Unfortunately there are some complete scumbags out there who get there kicks out of this stuff but it really boils my blood that people are subjected to this crap by cowardly scumbags.

You done the right thing by just keeping going.

Did you get the reg number?

Delighted to hear you are getting out running, pain free I hope. It s really difficult to improve swimming technique, I'm a strong swimmer but learnt to swim in the sea and I spent ages trying to correct my bad habits in the pool, I gave up eventually because it was putting me off swimming so fair play for sticking with it! As for the little gouger in the car he would need a clip around the ear;)

No I didn't get the reg. I think it was a navy car with 4 people in it but it happened very quickly. I was going up over a railway bridge when they overtook me and shouted something. I stuck my finger up, the car disappeared over the bridge and then when I got to the top the car had swerved in to a layby and I just booted it down the hill

Thanks it is pain free. Going to do another couple of miles tomorrow and that will be the first time in over 8 weeks that I have strung 3 pain free runs together!
