    Base it in Cork!

    Not a practical suggestion.
Roughly distribution of responsibilities would be as follows.
Dublin SAR will cover from Louth to Arklow.
Waterford SAR would cover Arklow to Skibbereen.
Shannon SAR would cover Skibbereen to Clifden.
Sligo SAR would cover Clifden to Lough Swilly.

This is only to illustrate that the current allocation of SAR resources is probably close to optimal distribution.

That is a reason to retain a presence at the airport but it and light aircraft flying school activity will not generate sufficient income to cover the current airport structure.

In the absence of "scheduled" commercial passenger flights (multiple per day) there will need to be an examination of the current airport setup.
Local management have a vested interest so are not the appropriate people to perform the review.

Thought that. Basing it out OF Cork would defeat the purpose of having a rapid helicopter response time. Surely it can stay in Waterford airport regardless.

The SAR contract has agreed response times day/night.
From that perspective an argument could be made for Cork.

From an operational perspective this would give excessive coverage to the SW to the detriment of the SE.

Consequently this should not be considered.

Also another point is that the SAR contract has a secondary component of MEDIVAC.
This would be of little benefit with the helicopter in Cork.

It'll be upgraded to a university while in Cork and then we'll move it back.

WLR fm reporting that the lay offs have been suspended after a vote of industrial action. Also stating a window of opportunity has arisen for the airline to begin.

Hopefully Aer SouthEast may actually get off the ground.

    From WLR FM's website:
He said he was told ‘things had moved on’ in the last few days and there was a ‘window of opportunity in terms of a new carrier’.
That kind of makes it sound like AerSoutheast is no more and that a new company will take over....

It is strange how they phrased it, hopefully we will get some more clarity soon

There's no such thing as clarity at Waterford Airport!

Is it any real wonder as to why the government were so reluctant to invest

in Waterford Airport? Who anyway will be effected by industrial action?

To hell with them all out there!

We need a foreign investor to purchase the airport.

I wonder if the new investors in the North Quays are interested in an airport???

Oh you mean, the people in the south east that subsidise everything that happens up in Dublin while we rot down here is it?

I don't think subsidise is the correct word, as it's actually the opposite way around.

However there is no reason why all this continuous investment should continue to be only in Dublin, it's clear not enough is done to encourage employment outside of the big capital.

    Wrong forum for this anyway.

Do I think the airport is the right way to get momentum going in Waterford? Most certainly not, it would be a monumental waste of money to do something like extend the runway, especially if it can be used somewhere else in the city.

It's certainly not the other way around. Sure, we can't even get 24/7 cardiac care for 500,000 people.

I'm not necessarily talking about investment for the airport but we get so little investment in the south east that we are crying out for anything.

There maybe no passenger services at the airport but there are plenty of private flights, general aviation, executive jets, training flights, search and rescue helicopter, Irish Aer corp, so I don't think the staff have nothing to do. Passenger flights are just a one of many services at an airport.

    Any update on this farce?
Have to book flights to UK for next year, was prepared to wait for flights from Waterford(with all the risks that that entails) but Aer Lingus are having a sale this month and don't want to miss out while waiting for farcical Aer Southeast to get their sh1t together or for some wishful thinking phantom white knight to ride/fly into Waterford on their steed/plane.
Pleeeeese someone must know WTF is going on?

It's a truly baffling situation, announcing flights while yet failing to sort out the commercial side of things. Last I heard was they still hadn't sent in an application to CAR, and on Monday it was exactly 2 months since the planned commencement of services.

Truly farcical. What has our local Minister for Farce Halligan got to say about this? Shouldn't he be banging heads between his butty Minister Ross and the ludramans at the airport?

What can Halligan do? He can't force a commercially run company to send in an application!

True for Aer Southeast but what about the airport company with various pols/councilors on the board? There is a political dimension to this, no?

Sadly, the conclusion that you'd have to reach is that no established airline wants to run flights from Waterford and the airport authorities will try to do a deal with absolutely anybody that they can find. The last crowd went bust soon after setting up in Waterford. The less said about Aer Southeast the better. Surely they're gone by the way side at this stage? It's two months since they announced flights. If they were any way optimistic about ever flying from Waterford, surely they'd at least have some news of progress by now?

We all know the score - no jets no hope. twopenny turbo-prop based services are simply not going to cut it. The airport site might be better becoming a retail or amusement park at this stage.

Nobody wants to spend any money on a runway. So that's that.

<sarcasm>It's only a 5.5hr round trip to Dublin Airport to pick someone up.</sarcasm>
