It would in this instance because DAA would be funding it through commercial revenue - not State funding.

So do you think the airport's owners should be asked to walk away and do the needful?

    Whats the needful?

If something is nationalised the State takes the asset off them?

If DAA were you able to to fund Waterford Airport too from their surplus revenue rather than the State needing to issue funding?

Yes of course that would be great..all the regional airports currently "supported" (I use that word lightly) should be state owned and have the same safety net Cork currently enjoys...why should the South West region have that advantage over the South East or North West.

Why? Because just like rail and roads, airports connect people, allow people do business, brings in tourists, the region grows economically, increases tax take, etc...

But we know that'll never happen because compared to Cork politically we're weak and would be ignored like we are with everything else!

Galway has 2 airports within 100km of the city. How many does Waterford have within 100km of the city?

No need for such a direct and personal attack!

He makes a very valid point...what's your problem with it?

By the way you used to make decent input to the discussion but now it's reduced to posts berating people for not agreeing with you without adding anything yourself to your argument!

What's wrong with what I said?

The 2040 National Planning Framework declares 5 cities to be the focus for intense development in the interim period. One of the 10 core national strategic outcomes is High Quality International Connectivity, which is achieved through investment in both the state airports and continued investment in the regional airports. Waterford Airport is specifically mentioned here as one of these regional airports. Making an investment to improve the utility of the airport is a sensible approach if the airport is specifically named in the National Planning Framework as a tool to achieve one of the strategic outcomes.

Of the 5 cities named for intense development, 2 have their own airports, Dublin and Cork. Limerick has Shannon which is quite close. Galway does not have its own airport but has Knock and Shannon both within 100km, Shannon connected by motorway and Knock 88km away by national road with targeted improvements to the Galway-Knock road included in the NDP. Meanwhile, Waterford has no airport with scheduled services within 100km. It has its own airport which has a short runway not suitable for short haul jet aircraft however as is repeatedly stated here there has been a long term plan to extend this runway to make it suitable for jet aircraft, which in light of all I have said above makes it a sensible investment given the relatively low investment sum required.

Any investment outside Dublin is seen as a handout and unjustified, would make you sick the scrutiny over such a small investment with massive upside for the region, compared to absolute scandals like the Children’s Hospital.

Excellent post! Reflects what's trying to be done on the ground here in the region (Outside us keyboard warriors!).

We still don't know what the private investors have in mind for the place but id doubt it's passenger flights. If it all comes together hopefully we'll have a facility that can tick all the boxes and keep everyone happy...connect the region with regular passenger flights, provide a decent amount of new jobs both direct and non direct and maybe even pay its own way to placate the naysayers. Kerry airport made an operational profit of nearly 1m last year on a paltry number of flights but with a few extra strings to their bow so shows that the small regional airports can be so much more than a drain on the taxpayer.

It's gone very quiet on this front again? Did the memo go to cabinet yet?

And then promptly re-buried more than likely. Why is the political class so corrupted like this, why do we stand for it?

Seems like this government are purposely dragging this out.what a blow to the south east region if this doesn’t go ahead.

Money's normally quite useful to actual functioning airports.

Flybe also seems to think knock is more viable than waterford, so a better investment.

Well this was unexpected, I hear prep work for the job has been undertaken already, let's see how soon we get this done!
