I'm in the exact same boat. I have heard that maths is intensive enough on its own, so I might just do a single honours degree. Though it would be lovely to supplement it with economics, that just sounds like a lovely degree!

Just as an FYI, if you do maths through TSM (with or without economics) you don't do all of the modules that you do in maths on its own, you can have a look at that kind of stuff here http://www.maths.tcd.ie/undergraduate/tsm/ :)

I'd say go with the one you have a real interest in over anything else.

I'm in a similar kind of situation even though I only do Biology. I'm more than likely going to put down arts and do English, geography and something else even though the only real job that'll lead me to is teaching which I'm not mad about and there aren't even a whole lot of jobs in to begain with. I'll probably put down a General Science degree 3rd or 4th on my list just for the sake of filling up space because I honestly have no idea how I'll fill all 10 spaces.

So basically even though sciene has more opportunities than a combination of English and Geography I have no real interest in it and I'll only be using it as a last resort and that won't even work because if I don't get the 370 for arts (which is nigh on impossible unless I have a major breakdown, I'm aiming more for the 525 mark for the NUIM scholarship) and I put science further down, I won't get that either so it's only going to be a filler.

In short, do what you love because if you're like me you'll regret it and dwell on it for ages if you don't. :)

If you do decide to pick science in NUIM, you'll have made a very good choice. ;) I've just gone into first year Science Ed in NUIM and it's brilliant. NUIM itself is brilliant. I only had Biology going in and I thought I was at a disadvantage but I wasn't really. Subjects in first year are basically the leaving cert course so by second year everyone is up to scratch. But ya, Science in NUIM is great!

As for the scholarship, it's extremely handy. It's €1000 and you can spend it on whatever you want! Last year it was 500 points but due to them probably getting fleeced it's now 525. That's still achievable!

Oh and also, don't worry to much about the job prospects now, in 5 years time things could be very different!

And how do we apply for a scholarship?

You don't have to apply for it. Once you get over 525 points and accept a place in NUIM you automatically get the scholarship. It doesn't come in one payment though. You get €500 in November and €500 in February provided you're still a registered student.

I finally brought myself to do it. Even though I could only fill out 1-6 for the Level 8's and the last two of those were only really to fill up a bit of space tbh. I still have to put in any Level 7's/6's because by the time I manaed to come up with those 6 level 8s I'd lost the will to live. It was like drawing blood from a stone.

    *insert drum roll here*

    1. DN500 - B.A. Joint Honours Arts - UCD
    2. MH101 - Arts - NUIM
    3. TR071 - Science - TCD
    4. DN200 - Science - UCD
    5. TR077 - Earth Sciences - TCD
    6. DC132 - Journalism - DCU

I'm positive that the 2 arts courses will swith numerous times between now and the deadline and then before the change of mind deadline at the start of July.

I'm kinda stuck in this dilemma, my family are saying ''go do science, you'll get a job and good pay after college!''

Also bear in mind, that this isn't really true. It can pay well, but there are thousands of science graduates floating around the country who are unemployed. It depends what you major in/what post grad you want to do. For example, I know people graduating from university with marine biology/marine science degrees and signing on. Whereas I know people graduating from the nautical science program (level 7 I think) and apparently it has 100% employment, and big demand for graduates. But think of all the university science graduates who did the hdip and are unemployed. It really depends what you want to do.

Does anyone actually know what sort of job you can get with a physiology degree (it's a specialist degree you can get from doing science in UCD, TCD, NUIG, and probably other colleges). It says on the different college sites that you can get into different graduate and master programmes or go work in medical or research labs but theres nothing specific, like what type of labs, what companies employ people with a physiology degree, I don't want to go to college for four years and end up unemployable unless I spend a fortune on doing some other course. I didn't know where else I could post this so I posted it here cause it's kind of relevant. :o

    5. TR077 Earth Sciences TCD
    6. DC132 Journalism DCU

Glad to hear you went for it over the science course. :)

Yeah, I figured I might as well do a course that I like and I'm naturally good at, rather than a course which wouldn't interest me as much. :D

Can't wait to get this LC craic out of the way now

    Do we actually have to?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,827 ✭✭✭Prodigious

Computer science in trinity, followed by computer science in ucd. That's it :pac:

    Do we actually have to?

No, level 6/7 and level 8 act as two different systems, come the round 1 offers if you filled out both you'll be offered your highest preference in each individually so you'll choose from 2 offers, one level 6/7 and one level 8, so there's no requirement for you to fill out level 6/7 (or level 8 as the case may be!) Of course you can always just take the absolute piss out of the level 6/7's like I did! Come on Sports with community leadership in Dundalk IT ;)

Computer Science in UCC. Did it for a week in TY, brother is in Y2, love the course.

Lowest points estimate is still 160 over the min. entry, but I threw in a few UL courses as well is the feces hits the proverbial rotary air mover...

340 in 2012. So I'm between 100 and 190 over. Which is nice...
