    1st race of the year done this morn. 5k in the bitter cold but at least wasn't frosty! My 1st 5k was last may at 25.15 n my last 5k, which was my 3rd , was in August at a time of 24.15 , delighted to do today's at 22.10! Happy with that!

    6 "easy" miles done. Now about a half stone lighter, though thankfully not for the same reasons we heard about yesterday. Was freezing cold when I was cycling home from work so I made sure to wrap up extra well. By 2k I was sweating like a bandit and it only got worse. The only other thing I have to say is roll on the bright evenings - it's some PITA trying to run on paths with no lights when cars are coming towards you with full headlights on. :(

    Haha, fortunately tho I only managed 10 miles.... And that was only because said hotel is 5 miles from home!

    No running for me over the last few days...I managed to pick up the norovirus/winter vomiting over the weekend.

    Some dose I tell ya. 10 solid hours of, well, you know...followed by two days of hiding from the kids who thankfully seem to have avoided it. Much respect to my wife who cleaned the house like a demon in an attempt to stave off further infection.

    Still a little off today but hope to get out and make some kind of start on my 12 week P&D plan for Paris..the first run of which should take place this evening.

    At least I'm 5 lbs lighter than I was on Saturday!

    Well done all on some busy running and racing.

    How long where you running for? I did five miles using a rate of 147 and found that it was very slow to start but when I warmed up I ended up running at a pace that was just a little slower than my standard 'slow' rate. Did you find that you managed to speed up at all during your run?

    From the articles I gather that the slow pace is a barrier for a lot of people but sticking with it seems to allow a runner to speed up over time. I reckon I'll give it a lash for some of my slower runs and see how it turns out.

    For anybody on here who runs along seafront between Clontarf Rd/Alfie Byrne Rd junction to Bull Island, use the grass as much as you can along there. Was out this morning and seen 3 people have nasty falls running along the path, sun is not getting to it to thaw out.

    Hi All, I haven't ran in a week... no good reason, well the missus had exams & I was doing daddy a lot. Weekend run got overshadowed by family events too. But I really am feeling it, my mood is lower than usual, my back/neck are tense like before I got into running. I'm raring to go for a run tonight & plenty of time this week open to me to build up good mileage before Cork training starts. On the upside I did do a lot of reading & figured out my HR zones (in theory). I want to do a session to check if my Max HR is what it is in Theory, and also want to check my resting HR for a few mornings (forgot to do it this morning). For some reason I'm not feeling as motivated about Cork as I was for DCM... maybe because there is no Charity/fundraising this time, or because I've done it now & I've less to prove to myself. And Maybe because I'm a bit anxious about the higher mileage & more complex plan of P&D55 compared to Hals Novice plan. Anyway just wanted to share my thougths & brain dump a bit.. everyone else is tired of listening to my obsessive run talk!

    Hi Stephen, I am exactly the same! And I think my reasons are very similar (bar the charity aspect because I didn’t do DCM for charity) I think another reason could be the weather at the moment. When we started training for Dublin, it was April/May/June and it was a pleasure to get out running in the nice bright evenings. I did a lot of my training for DCM on my local forest path where the dog could run free and it felt great to be out running in nature. Running around my village in the cold, wet and dark, dragging a reluctant doggie that would prefer to be on the couch is not just as pleasant! I am hoping that as the weather improves and the evenings get longer, it won’t be as difficult to get out.

    I know what you mean about P&D seeming daunting. There are no two ways about it; it is a much bigger time and effort commitment than Hal Higdon. But I am just trying to remember back to this time last year when HH2 seemed so incredibly daunting when looked at in its entirety. I just couldn’t visualise how I would ever be able to run 18/19/20 miles, but by the time that portion of the training came around, it was fine. So I am hoping that it will be the same with P&D. I am trying not to look ahead in the plan, literally just looking at week one at the moment and will look at each week as it arrives. Seems like less of an undertaking that way!

    While this thread has been fantastic, sometimes I feel like I am a complete lazy lump when I see the mileage/speeds some of the others are doing. I keep trying to tell myself that I am only in competition with myself and that everyone will have different fitness levels and different goals. It can be a bit disheartening to see how others seem to be coming on in leaps and bounds and I seem to have plateaud a bit or even gone backwards, so I am trying to look at it from the point of view that improvement is in my grasp if I work hard enough and follow the training plan.

    But just know that you’re not alone, I think we all suffer from a lack of motivation at times. It’s so great having this thread to ‘brain dump’ in, as I think my hubby will divorce me if he has to listen to any more of my verbal diarrhoea!

    Thanks ncmc, glad I'm not alone! as you say some days people are reporting great results and I'm delighted for them, but if you're not feeling it it can work against you. But you shoudl only compare to your former self.. and even if we don't feel it we have all come on a lot! and I suppose we have to up the training to see improvements. so P&D will do that for us, one step at a time is right.. I have been looking at it as a big picture.. and saying 'but Cork is in June, miles away". As you say & I hadn't really given it consideration, but The Weather is a big factor! lack of sunlight & motivation to run in the cold (esp this week!), but that's set to improve as we go!
    I think also that DCM got attention from my friends & family.. tap on the back & all that... now it's just 'oh another one, why?'.
    And maybe the route is getting a bit monotonous! might have to jump in my car more often to find new routes instead of just heading out the door... but we'll see. anyway thanks for sharing your similar feeling on it!
    I'm sure I'll be brand new once I get back out for a few good runs ;-) and actually start the program.

    I felt like this too a couple of weeks ago. The darkness is not enticing when the evening comes around and you know you have to get out for a run.

    I'm starting to feel the love a bit more now though, partly as I've been reading some books and watching moovies on Youtube ('Keep on Running' and 'Marathon Spirit' respectively) to get me in the mood and get my motivation back in some kind of shape. The book is an account of an English gent who did one marathon and then went on to do loads more (usual story :) - he gives nice accounts of his marathons in London, NYC and Paris among others that might whet your appetite.)

    So perhaps give some reading or viewing material some time, and maybe think back on some of your favourite running moments from last year and see if they help with the mojo.

    Stephen, ncmc and anyone else in a similar frame of mind.... I think the great thing about running is that the only person you need to beat is yourself. Fast, slow, small, large, male, female.... No matter what, the first result you look for is your own.

    Everyone is different and some people can give more time to improving rapidly. others look to improve gradually over time. Either way, I wouldn't bother concerning myself with what anybody else is doing. The key is that you are happy with the effort that YOU are putting in (or will be putting in) in order to achieve your goals.

    +1 on the motivational stuff above...
    I havent posted in ages. After DCM I basically took 2 months off. Achilles was at me and I wanted to be injury free and strong before getting back to training.

    I have to agree about the time of year impacting training.
    I've been lucky enough to get most of my runs in at lunchtime at work this year. (only started back training at the turn of the year)
    I cant imagine going out for runs in the evenings. Its awful out there, and as someone said above- its simply not really that enjoyable. - especially with no concrete goal in the short term.
    The sooner the evenings stretch out and we get a little bit of sun, the better!

    Also, having taken time off, I feel like I've gone way back. Am essentially at the level of fitness and ability where I was 12 months ago.
    Perhaps the experience will help me improve quicker, but perhaps not... only time will tell. :)

    That’s still pretty good, I just want something cheap and disposable so it isn’t the end of the world if it gets wet or it snaps off during my next race!

    I had a huge slump following DCM 2011, lost it for 3 months. Jan '12 seen me run a grand total of 17 miles. During early feb '12, I went for a run in the Phoenix park for the 1st time in ages, got my mojo back straight away.

    For this year, following DCM '12, I've kept my mojo going by going from a Marathon plan to a 5k plan. It's much different workouts and much shorter mileage. love it!

    So we all go through it, but we all come back around eventually.

    For this year, following DCM '12, I've kept my mojo going by going from a Marathon plan to a 5k plan. It's much different workouts and much shorter mileage. love it!

    So we all go through it, but we all come back around eventually.

    Agree with all of the above :)

    I'm planning to do Cork and Dublin too this year. But not too keen to dive into P&D just yet - it's too cold and dark! I'll stick with HH for now, one of the Intermediate plans, and save P&D for the summer training for Dublin 2013.
