I'm helping a friend with her research. All we have is a name, an approximate year of birth and county in England. I'm more familiar with Irish records. I don't suppose the UK have any free to view records? Where do I go from such scanty information?

like Irish Records it depends on the dates and location...

Civil registration started in England in mid 1837 (Sept. I think). A free BMD Index covering England & Wales is available on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ You can order certs for about £9 on line at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Transcripts and indexes of various civil, parish and some census records are available on FamilySearch.

what details do you have ?

I might be able to locate some leads for you on the census returns.

a good starting point for this is often father's name & occupation - e.g. from marriage cert..
