    I think all species adapt to circumstances.

    There will be two factors at play in a resource shortage.

    1. Smaller specimens may adapt better and larger specimens may die, thereby not reproducing.

    2. Prolonged resource shortage may have an inter-generational effect, whereby a famine may result in smaller young over several generations. In 1944, there was a famine in part of The Netherlands. The descendants of the children born in 1945 are still shorter than their peers.
