I realise the low that's due to arrive from our west is unpredictable at best, but if we were to see something akin to the ECM chart below, how would it manifest itself in terms of a wind and precipitation event?

Are those lows common enough (970ish)?

    ECM1-144.GIF

970 isn't too usual, and on that track we wouldn't get much wind since the highest winds would on the west side of the center.

It is a very strong storm before that point on the ECM though.

At 96 hours it is 940mb, with sustained winds up to 70 knots, hurricane force. It's well to our west at that point though and it's weakening as it gets further east.

    96 hours :

    120 hours :

    144 hours :

The exact track and intensity is highly likely to change though.

I've given up on anything at this stage, such have been the letdowns over the last 7-10 days. The best snowfalls are always surprise ones, so lets hope something catches the Met Eireann office out - even the Eagle this morning was downbeat. Gerry Murphy is practically dancing around Glasnevin in an Hawaiian shirt today...

You never know though, which is why we keep looking in here....

Don't ever show a pic like that around these parts again...:)

Right, so nothing to get overly excited about unless it's accompanied by real cold.

So did anyone see the game last night?

Well it does show it turning to snow in places at times.

Just impossible to know at this stage.

Wait wait, an ME forecast upgrade !!
Sunday: A cold and frosty start for many on Sunday morning, but clearing through the morning. Increasing wind and cloud will bring heavy rain into Munster by early afternoon and to most places by early Sunday night. Some very heavy falls in places ( 25mm possible) and some falls of sleet and snow are likely also, especially on higher ground.

Extended outlook is for the cold and unsettled weather to persist. Rain on Monday with some wintry precipitation likely, especially on higher ground, but drier periods at times on Tuesday and Wednesday but showers as well, some wintry.

Yes looks like we have a better chance of something on Sunday...GFS is showing surface temps of 7 to 8c in most parts for Thursday into Friday so that precipitation event is a write off.

That's a huge upgrade from the last forecast. Who's on duty today does anybody know?

Heights starting to build over Greenland there too ?
Hopefully. I'm no expert on the subject of WAA but that warm air towards Greenland on this chart would help build heights in that area?
    Am I correct?

Very close. I took this video at lunchtime today. It was at circa 450m. There was very heavy snow, big thick flakes. At 350m, it was sleet and then just rain from then down unfortunately.

Snowdrifts, where was that taken? Id say if you walked up the path to kippure it wouldnt take long to turn to pure snow.
Im hoping the "ski run" on kippure gets filled in, in the next week. It lasted until april in 2010.

Sorry, forgot to say where it was - it was along the Sally Gap overlooking Luggala.

And snow out west on the way in (for the love of god don't look at the UK in this one)

Ok, Novice Question here! Looking at the charts above, would those 2 cold airmasses combine? I have never really seen snow coming in from the west like that? Would that travel right across the country or would it be the western half of the country?
