Sleet can stick on wet grass and on cars if the surface is cold enough

At last Met Eireann have copped on to the potential for sleet and hill snow tonight in their forecast.
Amazing isn't it how we could see this last night and it takes the Met 24hours later to see it.
Won't be much but good 'ol Gerry mentioned last night that today would have temps upto 11C.
The reality is day time maxes have been coming in at 4 -7 C all day!!!!!
my max in Arklow today was 10.6c so they weren't too far out, rounded up,that's 11c.

Sleet freezes on the way down. Freezing rain freezes after it hits the ground which would mean ice, the ground must be below freezing for that to happen. Sleet will not stick like proper snow, but it will accumulate like snow on surfaces that are cold enough

Doesnt look like we're going to get any heavy percipitation within the next 5 days. Oh well, way to respark my hope for a brief few seconds.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,565 ✭✭✭Pangea

Hailstone showers here at the moment, got windy in the past half hour.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,550 ✭✭✭Min

I suspect very little to nothing here, conditions perfect for snow if they do.
    Currently 1.2C with a dewpoint of -1.0C.
The showers seem to die out when they hit the hills of western Kilkenny.

Nothing worth talkiing about, just to say I did see a few flakes of snow, the first for me this winter. The shower was very weak.
