Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Help Save Real Oviedo

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere but the Asturian club are at risk of going out of business unless they raise €2 million by November 17th. Players such as Cazorla, Mata and Michu all started their careers there. The club have made a final attempt to save themselves by starting a share issue. Anyone in the world can buy a share and they are priced at €11.50 each. I just bought one and if anyone else would like to contribute here is the link:
    http://www.realoviedo.es/yosoyelrealoviedo/ingles/index.html

    From their website:

"Now, Real Oviedo tries to avoid its nemesis and November 17th is the deadline, the supporters try to prevent their beloved club from uttering its swansong. Please, step ahead and become a hero: contribute to Real Oviedo’s dreams of a better future to come by buying even just a single share. As this traditional supporters’ chant goes ‘We shall be back in First Division, once again’.

A worthy cause...here's hoping they raise enough to survive :)

Cazorla, Mata and Michu ... couple of weeks wages each, sorted !

    joking.

good idea but and I see the hung a banner thanking all UK donations/purchases

Just bought one too, I hope its not in vain. Never thought I'd own a bit of a Spanish football club !

btw, did Mata not come through the Real Madrid academy?

Its shocking to think that a football club with history could become extinct over €2million, a fraction of what Barca or Madrid pay out each month in wages.

Understand the sentiment, but NIMAN is a Derry fan. Can do both really.

Not really, people are free to spend their money on whatever they want. No one here has any obligation to give their money to an Irish club.

He started at Oviedo I think and then joined Real where he went through their academy.

Did this happen to a German team relatively recently, and Bayern Munich gave an unguaranteed loan to the team to help them survive?

I wonder if any other team in Spain will step up and do the same!

Norrmally it would be LOI fans who would care about this kinda thing!

?? Just pointing out that a fan of a LOI club has also put in money towards it.

They claim on their site to have over 11500 Season ticket holders so if they buy at least 1 share each that'll give them over €130,000.

I'm sure they'll have fans that can afford more then 1 share so they should more then likely manage to reach €2 Million.

Yes, in their own league. Why would they give a flying one about a Spanish team when their clubs are in enough trouble as it is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Look, I could spare €11 so I bought a share.

If you don't want to do it, don't.

Because they care about the small clubs of the world, guess their is a sort of kinship involved.

Munich have given loans to Dortmund and 1860 Munchen as far as I know.

I'll look into getting a share, if only for the legend that is Viktor Onopko.

Derry City & Celtic two great Irish clubs

Agree with you about Celtic though.

No it's in Northern Ireland, part of the UK

Cop on ffs. The OP is highlighting a club in need. If you don't want to contribute, don't.

Plenty of people couldn't give two sh!ts about Irish "football" and might even like Spanish football more.

    Thanks for highlighting OP.

We'll have to agree to disagree, cos in my mind Ian Paisley is Irish too, whether he likes it or not:D

Any links to help save these Irish clubs?

Trains, planes and automobiles don't count as I'm abroad, and not in Derry.

This is why I didn't start a thread on Saturday when I bought a share. Knew this is the way the thread would go.

I've helped out Bohs, Galway and Dundalk over the past few years, buying some lotto tickets or entering last man standing competitions they were running, so don't bother throwing the "help your own clubs first" line at me. It's only a tenner and if it helps save them so the locals over there still have a team to follow then it's worth it. If you don't want to buy one then don't, simple.

It's ironic that some here are bitching about helping a foreign club when the game itself is foreign in origin. Anyone who refuses to help a charity or cause just because they're in a different time zone is a parochial idiot in my opinion but hey each to their own.

In the past I have donated money for Irish clubs too.

Think Cork and maybe last was Dundalk(?) - bought tickets for a prize draw.

Its kind of sad that Monaghan United were left go to the wall for the paltry sum of €80,000 especially with some of the generous people on here.

But look,we'll worry about the foreign clubs first.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

The people most likely to help Oviedo most likely helped Monaghan that's the point I was making earlier.

This is Ireland, we cant really slag other nations about bailouts seeing as we started the whole bloody thing.

Bought 4 shares, i can vote and go to the shareholder meetings.

Im getting great interaction from the players & club on twitter, seem like a great bunch of lads.

So the people who say "Why would I support a rival Irish team in Europe?" (even if it would increase their team's chances in years to come) seem to think that helping other Irish teams financially is alright. Or they just love to jump on topics like this.

Nah it was the Greeks, they got a loan a few months before we did.

I can understand why someone would rather support Oviedo rather than Monaghan. I can't think of a single player Monaghan United have ever produced. Oviedo on the other hand have produced the likes of Mata, Cazrola, Michu, etc. These are players who have provided a lot of entertainment to football fans for years now.
