Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How old is this series? What is the 21st Century 'renaissance' they are blathering on about? Who is behind this series - Barry Kenny.

A little late to be talking "21st century" when you're 12 years in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,522 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

isn't all of Ireland's rail 20th century or older. still using 20th century tech for signalling, locomotives, dmu/emu etc
what exactly is 21st century about any aspect of Irish rail other than the dates the happen to run trains?

I'm going to reserve judgement...it COULD be a truthful documentary on the state of our Railway, on the other hand, it could be one state body doing a whitewash for another.

    doubtful.

Sure Irish Rail cant cooperate with their sister companies so what chance they'd manage to do it with a completely separate state company?

looks rubbish from the promo - stating the obvious with the same old stock footage.

An inefficient, unaccountable, money wasting state broadcaster making a documentary about an inefficient, unaccountable, money wasting semi-state.

I assume that they will be mentioning the fact that it is now quicker by bus to Cork, Limerick, Galway, Belfast to name a few.

I assume they'll mention that despite the hundred's of millions of euro wasted in investment, journey times in the 80s were quicker to Cork than they are now.

I assume they'll be showing us the mid-life mk3s awaiting the cutters torch in North Wall.

I assume they'll be mentioning how, in the 21st century, less freight is been carried now than in the 20th.

I assume they'll be showing us the 15 year old laid up 2700s awaiting the cutters torch.

I assume they'll be showing us the couple of 22000s that the won't commission.

    Add to list as appropriate...

the 12 year old 8200 dart units which saw hardly any service and which IE should have took legal action to force their builder to repair or replace the units with no cost to IE.
no, the only thing they will show is stuff to make people think everything is fine and dandy when it isn't.

I'm very highly educated. I know words, i have the best words, nobody has better words then me.

Why did Irish Rail not take legal action against the manufacturer of those Dart units?

From the telly tonight's episode is described as follows
Documentary series. The first episode looks at the creation of railways in Ireland. exploring how they overtook canals as the primary means of mass transportation.

Sounds like riveting stuff all right like a dozen auld programs that went before just mixed up a small bit with interviews and clips swapped around and thrown into a few half hour slots!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,045 ✭✭✭Hilly Bill

To be fair, not everyone has seen those dozen auld programs so it will appeal to some . To the hardend spotter or enthusiast it may be same old same old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,498 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

The intro suggests it's going to be a promo for Irish Rail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,522 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

21st century railway is what it's called and yet it starts in the 19th... good start!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,373 ✭✭✭✭foggy_lad

The contributors seem to be stuttering and looking to the side a lot as if they have trouble remembering their lines, it sounds scripted and like they know very little about what they are talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,498 ✭✭✭✭coylemj

The only reason they upgraded the network was because a train derailed in the minister's constituency! At least there's some honesty and realism in the program!

    That was terrible.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,733 ✭✭✭✭corktina

it wasn't terrible, it was basic, but then it needs to be because 99% of people know squat about railways

    Some nice archive film

On the whole better than I thought, but lets wait til the next episode...

It was quite interesting apart from the stuttering commentators.

For a worse experience, we could always get a coach enthusiast to upload a video to the Tube of You from his mobile and narrate over it with an Eric Cartman voice going
Trains are for hippies, dude, private sector coaches rock!

Give me a job when I leave university!

Hey homosexuality was decriminalized in this country in 1993 ,
coach entusiasm is still illegal as far as i'm concerned.;)

Possibly not? that other good program Ar an Oileán is on the list already. The production company has possibly not allowed it to be on the rte player or rte thought there might not be enough interest to include it?

Does anybody know where the music from the ad was taken from? It's really nice.

Nope, I'm playing another RTE player prog just now and it's fine.
21st Cent Rly doesn't pop up when I search for it on the site.

    Weird.

You missed nothing, a typical lazy RTE production - all railways in Ireland consist of is DART commuters, the DART inspired CIE management....blah, blah...no CIE management interviewed, a rather disturbing close up of Todd Andrews face and the only thing missing was Craig Doyle! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,195 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

a rather disturbing close up of Todd the machete Andrews face
and they only gave him one mention, and that was in relation to the most stupid short sighted closure in irelands history for which he should have been sacked for, and even they didn't discuss that much, still theirs next week i suppose.
    Craig Doyle!
oh god please no, i can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched it last night on the RTE player. Not too impressive to be honest, as a first episode I'd expect it to hook me in but it didn't.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73 ✭✭Temp101

Disappointingly poor, but that was no surprise. A three-part series about 21st Century Railways, and it takes an entire episode to set the scene? I watched the programme with non-railway folk, and they found it bland and uninformative.

    Ah FFS! No way?

I did not bother, but one question which I needed to know the answer. What was the pontificating tweed jacket to modern rolling stock close-up shot ratio?

Naw, they seem to have forgo the tweed jacket for this latest hash on Irish railways, instead ''the expert'' seem to have chosen an antique armchair instead with a nice set of bound books as a backdrop, possibly bound in leather lol, now what message the armchair was sending out, Im not sure.
Look this series is a waste of time, if you want to get a real clear message of whats going on inside the CIE group, just have a glance at todays Indo, I know, O'Reilly's rag, but according to this article by Paul Melia, CIE is close to going into receivership, its very very serious, there is no money, its bankrupt, you can make all the TV programs you like, with romantic historians sitting in armchairs with the trainset going around in circles in the next room, but the reality is, they have to wake up and smell the coffee.

Would it , could it be allowed go into administration/recivership .... And would it save anything by going bust .... ( excess staff , staff pensions ? )

It worked for GM but our company law is probably significantly different.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,337 ✭✭✭dowlingm

No way I'd say. Every other semi-state's workforce would know their pension would be next.

  • Registered Users Posts: 416 ✭✭davidlacey

it just felt like a cheap filler for 30minutes, obviously a result of rte cutbacks, no mention of freight and the decline plus benefits of it which is surprising, very vague in the history of the railway too

They are not really interested, too bothersome for them, shipping company I work for now have work with BNSF, there are railroad companies who do embrace railfreight, Irish Rail is not 1 of them, that is not surprising, but it could be their salvation, the antique armchairs are full of woodworm and sadly nobody can see it, but look closely and you can spot it.
