Ahaha, I can't say Worcestershire either!

Also study (shameful one I know) - when I was a kid I couldn't say it. Fast forward to now and I'm still calling our study a "dusty" :pac:

I cant say the word 'rural' or the name 'Rory'.

Its the 2 'r's that get me every time, it just sounds so wrong when i say them :/

The worst thing was when i was in college and i had to do a presentation on the rural landscape of some place. I kid you not, every 2nd word was rural... :0

I still manage to laugh at it though :)

There's a lovely list of words on this site with examples of commonly mispronounced words and their correct pronounciation. I'm certainly guilty of saying Fillum as opposed to film.:D

You three are most likely all correct

    I'll go with your pronunciation!

Was a taximan who told me Dunleer

Don't change it now, confuse matters altogether! :):)

It's doll-eer to me, and always has been. Although when I was young I might have fallen to Doll-iyay too. I made a mistake with another Dublin street but for the life of me I can't remember it now.

Another one I often hear is either 'barm brack' or 'barn brack'. I always said 'barm brack' but both seem to be used universally.

Edit: Just remembered the street, 'Montague Street'. I pronounced it 'Mon-taygue' when it should have been 'Mon-tah-gew'. My boss at the time sniggered when I said it, my co-worker explained my error, I was so embarrassed, but then I was only 15 at the time.

    Also there's coincidence.

Just realised I never pronounce "asked" properly. It always sounds like "assed"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

I have heard 'asked' pronounced as 'axed' too!

Think its like an aftermath thing from having a lisp when I was a child, and a stammer sometimes now in some situations, getting better though :)

Non-alcoholic. No matter how much I practice in my head I say 'nonal-clolic'. So I usually say 'Any N.A. beers?' in a bar but they always say 'any what?' and I have say it. Ironically I can say it better when I'm drunk

:D Try saying "Any alcohol-free beers?" and see how you get on. :)

Violence or violin or basically anything with 'vio' at the beginning. I have a habit of over pronouncing the 'o' and it sounds odd and overly posh. I avoid using those words unless I desperately have to.

    Allele and species.

I pronounce species as "shpee-sees" instead of "spee-shes". Pretty unfortunate since my course has a huge biology section. :o:o
